Chicago Cubs Lineup (NLDS Game 5): For All the Marbles! ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

CUBS LINEUP — Look, I really REALLY want the Cubs to move on to the NLCS. Not only for all the obvious reasons, but especially to knock out the annoying Brewers. But I do want to take this one moment to just appreciate the way this team battled back after going down 0-2. They won one playoff series against the Padres, and they have shown a lot of fight against the “best team in baseball.”

No matter what happens, this was a good Cubs team and a good Cubs season.

Now, knock their freakin’ teeth in.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Kyle Tucker, DH Seiya Suzuki, RF Ian Happ, LF Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3B

Once again, Craig Counsell is going with his standard “versus righties” Cubs lineup.

He’s rolled with this group in this order in all but one game this postseason. And, well, he’s made it to Game 5 of the NLDS. So, keep it going!

Michael Busch is the Cubs hottest hitter, slashing .292/.370/.792 (209 wRC+) this postseason, with FOUR home runs in seven games. But he’s not the only guy who’s turned up this month.

Nico Hoerner is slashing .429/.414/.571 (174 wRC+). Kyle Tucker is slashing .304/.429/.435 (151 wRC+) Seiya Suzuki is slashing .222/.250/.556 (117 wRC+)

Stay hot for one more game, boys. Let’s GO.

Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:

Jackson Chourio, LF Brice Turang, 2B William Contreras, C Christian Yelich, DH Andrew Vaughn, 1B Sal Frelick, RF Caleb Durbin, 3B Blake Perkins, CF Joey Ortiz, SS

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Drew Pomeranz, LHP

The lefty, Drew Pomeranz, is taking the ball in the bottom of the first inning tonight at American Family Field, but calling him the “starter” isn’t quite right, as he’ll not likely throw more than an inning. Instead, for the second time this postseason, Craig Counsell is rolling with an “opener” in a big game.

He last did this against the Padres, with the righty Andrew Kittredge opening up for the lefty Shota Imanaga. And while Imanaga is theoretically expected to cover a few innings tonight, I don’t think Counsell is going to go directly to him after Pomeranz.

Why? Because Counsell will likely have slightly better matchups if he turns the ball over to a righty, either Colin Rea for some bulk, or just a one-inning right-hander, than another lefty. But, again, I do think Imanaga will eventually make an appearance unless things REALLY go the Cubs way early.

Pomeranz has thrown five perfect innings so far this October, with no hits, no walks, and five strikeouts. Let’s hope he can keep that going tonight in the first.

Milwaukee Brewers: Trevor Megill, RHP

The Brewers are also rolling with an opener tonight, handing the ball to their closer, Trevor Megill. I think they’re reaaaaaaaaally hoping to avoid another first inning bomb from Michael Busch.

Megill has appeared in two games so far this series (total of just 1.0 IP).

After that, it’ll be all hands (besides Freddy Peralta) on deck. But the guy you should expect to see for a few innings is Jacob Misiorowski, who comes armed with that 104 MPH heater and some nasty secondaries. Misiorowski has a ton of upside and has already shut down this Cubs lineup for 3.0 innings earlier this series. That said, he also has a tendency to get wild and rattled. So if the Cubs are patient and/or fight off some tough pitches, they could create some traffic, at which point Pat Murphy won’t be able to stick with him.

Jose Quinatana and Quinn Priester are also options. Quintana also shut the Cubs down for three innings earlier this week, but Priester was lit up by the Cubs.

In any case, this is effectively bullpen vs bullpen, right from the jump. Winner takes all.
