The Colorado Avalanche are off to an impressive start with two dominant victories. Nine players scored 14 goals, with Nicolas Roy making a notable impact by scoring in both games.
“I’m feeling good. Coming in this year and knowing all the guys and the systems help a lot. I had a good summer, getting ready for the season, good camp,” Roy said. “The team has been playing good, putting in some goals, that helps a lot, so it’s been good so far.”

The 6-foot-4 forward was acquired at the trade deadline last season from the Toronto Maple Leafs for a conditional 2027 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2026 fifth-round draft pick. He had five points (3G, 2A) in 15 regular-season games and six points (3G, 3A) in 13 postseason games.
Avalanche start season without 2 forwards
Roy’s average ice time in the two games is 12:33, playing with 11 forwards and seven defensemen. The Avs have done well to start the season despite missing Logan O’Connor and Zachary L’Heureux due to lower-body injuries.
“It’s different, for sure. Every time you go on the ice, you have different linemates. But so many good players on this team, so whoever you’re going with is going to go well. It’s been different, but it’s been going well,” Roy said.
The Avalanche’s depth has proven itself in the first two games with goals from two bottom-six players — Roy and Parker Kelly. The group’s versatility is an advantage, especially in an 11/7 format.

“You don’t always end up playing with the same guys all the time. You don’t really know their tendencies — a little tougher to find them. Talking helps a long ways, especially in the defensive zone,” Roy said. “It’s nice, though. We have the luxury of having guys that can play center, winger. Guys that can take face off on the right side, left side. We have the luxury that some teams don’t have. It’s a bonus for us for sure.”
Head coach Jared Bednar knows the strengths and weaknesses of his players, which is how he sets his lineup and deploys them accordingly.
“It’s a great strength that we have with a couple of those guys. Whether it’s Svech (Fedor Svechkov), he’s played wing and center. Same thing with Royzee (Roy). Same thing with Kells (Kelly). So when you have a lineup where, if you want to spread the ice time out, you got to mix and match them a little bit, right? …” Bednar said. “It takes a certain amount of focus and experience to be able to bounce back and forth. And I think Svech is really comfortable there. I’ve talked to him, and so is Royzee. It gives us some good options when we’re running 11-seven.”
What changed from last season for Roy?
During training camp, the Amos, Quebec native said he did not change anything in his training over the summer. The only adjustment he made was doing more yoga.
“I always try to improve. I always try to be faster, stronger, every training camp I get into.
“Getting a little bit older and not really flexible. So I do more yoga now than I did before. I’ll add this at least once a week, but as far as skating and training and strength, pretty similar to what I did before,” Roy said.
One thing Roy said he focused on during the offseason was refining his shot.

“I usually always look for the pass … I’ve been working on my shot a lot,” he said. “I do try to attack more, so I have more shots than I used to in the past. That’s one of the things I worked on, but just overall I’m feeling good right now. Had a good summer of training, and will try to keep it going.”
The proof is in the numbers. Last season, Roy had 21 shots on goal in 15 games with a shooting percentage of 14.3. In just the first two games, he has five SOG and a 40 S%. It is early in the season, but his stats will climb if he keeps playing this way.
