Novak Djokovic was eliminated from the Shanghai Masters at the semi-final stage on Saturday.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion was stunned by world No.204 Valentin Vacherot 6-3, 6-4 in a thrilling encounter.
With the weather proving an issue and a motivated underdog as his opponent, Djokovic failed to reach the Shanghai Masters finalGETTYAs has been the case throughout the tournament, Djokovic struggled with the court conditions once again.
After vomiting on court against Yannick Hanfmann in the second round last week, Djokovic was seen placing his face in what appeared to be an ice bucket as he battled with Vacherot.
And his Monegasque opponent exploited his struggles as he raced to a first-set lead.
Vacherto then broke Djokovic late in the second set at 4-4 before winning the match on his serve to complete a historic win.
He becomes the first player from Monaco to reach an ATP Masters final, and the lowest-ranked player in history to reach a Masters final.
But perhaps the biggest piece of history made by Vacherot with his win is that he is now the lowest-ranked player to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final since the format was created in 1990.
Vacherot is also the lowest-ranked player to defeat Djokovic at a Masters since Luca Nardi defeated the ten-time Australian Open winner at Indian Wells in 2024.
Nardi was ranked 123rd in the world at the time.
While Djokovic has enjoyed a record-breaking tournament, his exit from the tournament extends his wait for another Masters 1000.
The Serb hasn’t picked up a Masters crown since his triumph at the 2023 Paris Masters.
