TEMPE — Josh Sweat’s first season with the Arizona Cardinals has been one of his best.
Sharing fourth among NFC defenders in sacks (11) and tied for first in forced fumbles (four) to go along with 12 tackles for loss and 16 QB hits, the pass rusher has lived up to all of the offseason hype and then some.
From a Pro Bowl perspective, those numbers alone typically scream Pro Bowl.
Throw in the fact that Sweat ranked second in fan voting for the NFC side — which accounts for one-third of the overall vote while players and coaches make up the rest — and his spot on the All-Star roster, this time around seemed much more of a given than others.
But once the list of names was announced, Sweat was nowhere to be found among the league’s best that includes current teammates Budda Baker and Trey McBride.
Instead, he was given the “alternate” tag, while New York’s Brian Burns and Los Angeles’ Jared Verse and Byron Young received the honors at outside linebacker.
And that just doesn’t sit right for Sweat — for a number of reasons.
Cardinals pass rusher Josh Sweat is not thrilled about the Pro Bowl snub and feels like the honor was taken away from him in a career year:

“What else did they want me to do? The popularity was there. You can say ‘losing team,’ it didn’t matter. Check this, I’m the only double-digit (sack) guy that didn’t make it,” Sweat said. “I don’t care about ‘losing team.’ It’s an individual thing. That’s why I’m so upset.
“I’m upset because the fans that actually went out there and voted for me, it meant nothing at the end of the day.”
“There’s only two individual things that you can get, Pro Bowl and All-Pro. I got one taken away from me. I’m just flat out saying it: It was taken away from me and it ain’t the first time. That’s all I can really say about it. The fans said, ‘He should be the guy.’ My play showed I should be in, but somewhere, some popularity within the league said that, ‘He shouldn’t be in.’ I just want to know if I’m crazy.”

Given the stats and popular vote heading into the final Pro Bowl decisions, Sweat’s far from crazy.
Not only do Burns (15) and Young (11) have the same number of sacks as Sweat, but the duo also found themselves in the top 10 for fan voting. Burns paced all NFC OLBs, while Young came in as the fourth-leading vote-getter at the position for the conference.
It’s hard to find a concrete argument against either earning a Pro Bowl nod.
Then there’s Verse.
Save for his QB hits (24) and total pressures (59 to Sweat’s 38), Verse trails his NFC West counterpart in just about every major category with 6.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss and three forced fumbles.
“I’m definitely upset. And I’m not upset with whoever made it, that’s whatever. That’s not their fault for it. They didn’t do it,” Sweat continued. “But I just don’t know how you look at all the people and say this is who we should leave out. The one who leads in forced fumbles.
“I’m going to tell you right now, judging by how who was in the top 10 for voting and who wasn’t, all the people who made it that didn’t even show up (in the voting) and the people who made it who weren’t at the top (statistically), y’all don’t even stand a chance. Y’all don’t stand a chance. It does not matter. So just keep balling, keep playing, and that’s really all I can say, but (expletive) was taken from me. I don’t like that.”
