PENFIELD, N.Y. – Penfield parents are demanding answers and want their voices heard after threats were sent to the district last month. As News10NBC first reported Tuesday night, parents weren’t allowed to speak at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting.

I tried repeatedly to get in touch with the district, but they did not respond.
Parents, including a member of the Parent Advisory Board, wanted to discuss safety and security at the meeting. They also want more communication from the district.
“We’re all fearful to have our kids go to school and we’re really just looking for some type of reassurance,” said parent Lindsay Woods.
I reached out to the district to speak with someone on the board, but no one answered.
“The issue at hand that we really wanted to make sure was being covered or discussed or collaborated on with the district was actually this fact that there needs to be a proactive approach to safety and security on our school campuses,” said parent Rebecca Delaney-Johnson.
Delaney-Johnson wants to know if the school district is planning to engage with parents on the topic of safety and security in schools.
“We still need an outlet. We still need a place to voice our concerns, to communicate with them collaboratively,” said Delaney-Johnson.
Communication from the school district is what other parents are looking for too.
“I feel like with transparency and further communication from the district, it would be very reassuring for parents to, you know, send our children back to schools and know that they’re safe and protective measures are in place,” said parent Meredith Lukasiewicz.
At Tuesday night’s board meeting, some parents spoke up anyway. Delaney-Johnson said she went to the podium to calm the crowd.
“We had sat there for an hour giving them our ears, and it felt like they couldn’t even give three minutes to listen to a concerned parent who again, was was speaking very calmly and respectfully and just, you know, trying to make them listen,” said Woods.
After speaking with parents, I tried to reach the school district again. I went to the Penfield Central School District Office building and was greeted by a security guard at the entrance. The guard said the board president wasn’t in, so I asked if anyone else would be available for comment. The guard went to a clerk, and the clerk told him that no one planned to comment.
One parent questioned if future discussions about safety and security in schools could be held at a roundtable, open discussion or virtual townhall.
The Penfield Central School District has another board meeting scheduled for November 4th.
