SAN DIEGO – A man who pushed a fisherman onto sharp rocks in Mission Bay, eventually killing him, has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and assaulting another inmate in jail.
The victim, Eric Stephen Nelson, 51, was able to drive himself to a hospital after the 2023 incident, but he passed away 25 days later from blunt force trauma.
Lee Eduardo Orozco, 36, did not use a weapon in the Aug. 24, 2023, incident, but was identified by Nelson in a photographic line-up of six suspects while Nelson was in the hospital, according to testimony in the preliminary hearing.
Deputy District Attorney Shane Waller said on Oct. 3 that Orozco is expected to receive a 6-year term in state prison on Nov. 21. He added that the sentence for jail assault will be served concurrently.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Joan Weber dismissed a murder charge after Orozco pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault.
Weber heard the preliminary hearing in May and commented that the “jutting rocks” where Nelson was fishing were more dangerous than if he had fallen on concrete.
Nelson was injured in the North Cove area of Mission Bay.
Orozco reportedly told Nelson, “We’ll have to finish” something in reference to an earlier quarrel, but it was unknown what it was about.
Nelson suffered internal injuries to his ribs and had a broken jaw. A detective testified that Nelson was able to identify Orozco’s SUV, which had a broken back window.
The case was investigated for almost a year before Orozco was arrested on Dec. 12, 2024. He remains in the central jail without bail.
