No-one is immune from a gut-wrenching case of mistaken identity, not even Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.
During an appearance on talkSPORT Drive, Lampard was forced to recount how he made the humiliating error while at one of the many sold-out Oasis gigs at Wembley.
It was only after an awkward interaction with someone who he thought was a famous actor did he realise what he’d doneGettyIn a hilarious yet cruel twist, it was Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher who coaxed the tale out of Lampard as he sent in a voice message to the talkSPORT Drive team demanding the story be told.
As soon as Gallagher’s note began playing, Lampard laughed as he knew exactly what was about to transpire.
With Drive co-host Andy Goldstein egging him on, Lampard had no choice but to lift the lid on how he mistook a random stranger for legendary English actor Benedict Cumberbatch at an Oasis concert.
Lampard’s hilarious case of mistaken identity
“I watched the show, get invited down to the area downstairs where a few faces hang out,” Lampard said.
“I’ve had a few beers, so I’ve enjoyed my show. I walk through this room, I’m following Christine (Lampard’s wife) through. I spot on my left is this table, I spot who I see is Benedict Cumberbatch.
“I go, ‘Christine, one second.’ I go, ‘Benedict, listen, my son’s a massive fan of Spider Man films and Dr Strange.’
“He’s starting to give me this funny look, but I’m just going for it. I said, ‘I never do this, I never take photos because I know what it’s like.’ I said, ‘Do you mind if I just get a photo for my son, he’ll love it.'”
At this point, the man who Lampard thought was Emmy award-winner Cumberbatch had politely declined a picture.
“I’m thinking he’s a bit rude then, so I’m going, ‘Come on Benedict, you can do the photo,'” Lampard said.
As Lampard continued his pursuit of a picture with the Cumberbatch lookalike, Christine was on the other side of the room and gave a look to her husband that indicated she knew the man was not the actor.
Lampard may have pulled a similar face when he realised he wasn’t speaking to the actual Benedict Cumberbatch after the Oasis concertGetty“She should have intercepted it,” Lampard joked.
Lampard’s plea for a photo lasted five minutes before the Cumberbatch lookalike ‘begrudgingly’ granted his wish.
As the Coventry City boss and his wife walked off, Christine told him the man he just got a photo with was not Cumberbatch.
Lampard refused to believe that was the case for the rest of the night.
But upon waking up the next morning, the fear from the previous night’s activities engulfed Lampard.
It wasn’t helped by the fact Lampard had to accept the man he pestered for a photograph was not Cumberbatch.
Cumberbatch’s films have grossed well over £10billion, largely thanks to several appearances in Marvel flicks as Dr StrangeGettyWhat made the experience all the more stomach-churning for Lampard was that he had met the man multiple times before.
“This fella, I’ve met about ten times, he goes to my hairdresser, his name is James and he’s a good bloke,” Lampard said.
“I’ve always thought he looks a bit like Benedict.”
Lampard added: “I get his number and I sent him a voice note saying I was so sorry.
“To be fair to Jamie, he actually helped me get through it. But I feel sick in my stomach when I talk about it. It was so bad.”
Unfortunately for Lampard, what he thought would be a tale that stayed between him and Jamie quickly spread like wildfire and eventually worked its way back to Noel.
The Gallagher brothers sent the nation into meltdown as they reunited after 15 years apart back in July In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, Noel revealed he didn’t expect the widespread clamour that ensued upon the announcement of Oasis’ reunionGetty“Maybe this will be some sort of therapy, to help me get through it,” Lampard joked.
What has been the impact of the Oasis concerts?
Lampard was one of several prominent football figures, including Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, to have enjoyed an Oasis gig in recent months following the iconic reunion of Noel and Liam Gallagher.
The legendary band played a whopping 19 gigs across the UK and Ireland, with hundreds of thousands of fans turning out to sing along to their catalogue of anthems.
How has Lampard’s Coventry City performed this season?
As for Lampard, he has overseen a dream start to this season’s Championship campaign for Coventry City.
The Sky Blues sit at the top of the second tier on 19 points and remain the only unbeaten side in the league, with the latest result being a 5-0 mauling of Sheffield Wednesday.
Coventry’s charge under Lampard comes as they look to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2001.
