LeBron James sent NBA fans into meltdown on Monday.
Posting a short video clip to his social media channels, the NBA‘s all-time leading scorer launched fans into a state of anticipation when he teased ‘the decision of all decisions’, with the hashtag #TheSecondDecision.
James teased social media when he posted a video of ‘The Second Decision’GettyOn Tuesday, however, at 12 p.m. ET the Los Angeles Lakers superstar put all speculation to rest when it was announced that it was just an advertisement for Hennessy.
James and the ‘world’s leading cognac’ have once again collaborated, and this time, they unveiled the Hennessy V.S.O.P Limited Edition by LeBron James, which will be available in select markets globally in October.
“It’s an honor to continue this partnership with Hennessy,” James said.
“Our first collection was about a shared pursuit of excellence and boundary pushing, and this new limited edition is another chapter in that story.
“The design features my crowning gesture, which is special for me and stands for celebration and connection. That’s what this bottle is made for.”
Fans were sent in a frenzy about his potential retirement

The initial ten-second teaser video depicted the 40-year-old in a red checked shirt, emulating what he was wearing when he appeared on an ESPN special titled ‘The Decision,’ in 2010.
Of course, this was where, then aged-25, the budding superstar infamously stated that he was ‘taking his talents to South Beach’ to join up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh at the Miami Heat during 2010 free agency.
This move required him to depart from his hometown team Cleveland Cavaliers after seven seasons – the team who selected him out of high school with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.
Ahead of the announcement, fans were sent into a frenzy with nobody quite sure what this ‘decision’ would be about – an advertisement? A collaboration? Or, what was feared most, a decision on his retirement from the league.
“Better not be retiring,” one fan posted to X (formerly Twitter).

James sent shockwaves around the NBA when he announced his decision to go to Miami in 2010 free agencyGetty“Pls no [heartbreak emoji],” were the only words another fan could muster.
“I don’t want LeBron to get old,” a third posted.
“That Farewell Tour announcement tweet gonna end relationships,” a fourth fan wrote.
James hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about all the retirement speculation, having said in training camp that once he is no longer ‘excited’ by the ‘process,’ then he knows it will be time to hang up his sneakers.
“For me, it’s just, am I still excited about the process? Do I still get motivated about the process every single year?,” James said.
“Preparing my body. Preparing my mind. Working on my body, training, things of that nature, to get ready for a full season.
“I think once I kind of fall out of love with the process, then I’ll know for sure. Then, it’d probably be the end for me.”
Fortunately for James fans – and basketball fans for that matter – the King is not retiring just yet.
History awaits for King James
Entering his 23rd season in the league at the ripe old age of 40, James is, for the first time, playing a season in which he is in on an expiring contract.
This season, he is set to earn $52.6 million in base salary, which is 34.03 percent of the Lakers’ salary cap.
LeBron James has since become the NBA’s all-time leading scorerGetty Luka Doncic and LeBron James will take part in their first full season as a duoGettyAccording to Spotrac, Luka Doncic‘s $46million base salary for the 2024-25 season is the only other contract which exceeds 12 per cent of the salary cap, with his cap hit standing at 29.7 per cent.
But once he takes to the hardwood in the 2024-25 campaign, he will make league history as he will be the only player to have ever participated in 23 seasons.
Last year, James was tied for the most seasons played in with 2024 Hall of Fame inductee Vince Carter, who played 22 seasons between 1998 and 2020, and retired from the game aged 43.
While veteran players tend to see their production numbers decline as they get older, the 21-time All-Star has continued to challenge Father Time.
In 70 regular season outings in the 2024-25 campaign, James was averaging 34.9 minutes per contest – his lowest since the 2020-21 season (33.4 minutes) – and averaged 24.4 points per contest from 51.3 per cent shooting from the field and 37.6 per cent from beyond the arc.
He also notched 7.8 rebounds, a team-leading 8.2 assists and a steal, as he went on to finish in sixth place in the NBA MVP race.
Now in his first full season with Doncic at the helm with him after the blockbuster deal between the Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks at last year’s trade deadline which saw Anthony Davis head to Dallas, James and the Lakers are still somewhat in a position to challenge for a postseason berth.
The ceiling of the team as a whole remains to be seen, with some good contributors in Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and the addition of Deandre Ayton in free agency.
But with James not getting any younger, and with retirement all but certain in the near future, this could be one of the all-time great’s last chance to get that coveted fifth title win and ring.
