Emma Raducanu was forced to retire from her first round match at the Wuhan Open.

The former US Open champion appeared fatigued during her clash with Ann Li on Tuesday.

Raducanu was trailing 6-1, 4-1 when she called for a medical timeout in the second set.

Medical staff, including a physio and tournament doctor, could then be seen treating the 22-year-old courtside.

However, after checking Raducanu’s pulse and blood pressure, the match ended with the Brit’s retirement.

American Li will now face ninth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round.

The worrying scenes involving Raducanu follow soaring temperatures at the event in China.

Play was suspended across all outdoor courts earlier this week after temperatures reached 34 degrees in Wuhan.

Elsewhere, the Shanghai Masters has seen players endure 30-degree heat and 80 per cent humidity.

The ‘brutal’ conditions saw Novak Djokovic vomit twice during his third round win on Sunday.

However, Jannik Sinner was unable to come through his last 32 match, retiring due to cramp having been left struggling to walk.

When is Raducanu playing next?

It is unclear whether Raducanu will play as scheduled at next week’s Ningbo Open.
