Greeley City Councilman Tommy Butler will run to represent Colorado House District 50 in 2026, emphasizing his desire to be a leader for residents and fight for housing affordability.
During his six years as the councilman for Ward 1, Butler has advocated for affordability across Greeley, specifically when it comes to housing. This has included efforts to secure year-round funding for a homeless shelter in Greeley, which the city has fully funded in the 2026 budget, according to Butler. He also serves on the board of Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity.
“I know how badly the people in this district deserve a fighter—someone who will fight for affordability at all levels, particularly housing affordability,” Butler said in his announcement. “You deserve a leader, a policy wonk, and a fighter.”
House District 50 encompasses the entirety of the eastern side of Greeley, part of which Butler already represents as the current representative for Ward 1, which covers the northeastern section of the city. If elected, Butler will extend his representation to the southern half of east Greeley, as well as Garden City and Evans, along with other smaller Weld County municipalities.
“I decided to run for the Greeley City Council because my neighbors deserve someone who will fight for them,” Butler said on his campaign website. “I have brought long-overdue infrastructure funding to East Greeley. I have fought to increase funding for affordable housing in Greeley, which has led to great developments like Star Rise Apartments and Hope Springs. It is time to continue that fight at the state level.”
The District 50 seat, which had been filled by a Democrat since Jim Riesberg won the seat in 2004, was flipped last year by Republican Rep. Ryan Gonzalez, who won by only a few dozen votes against Mary Young, the incumbent.
Gonzalez will run as the incumbent next year, hoping to keep his seat in the House. In the primary, Butler so far faces a challenger only in Jerry Harvey, a board liason for the Aims Community College Board of Trustees.
