It didn’t feel like Week 6 of the College Football season was going to be a notable one heading into it. However, that feeling couldn’t have been more wrong! Penn State and Texas both made big headlines for the wrong reasons. Bill Belichick and his UNC team got throttled, and he got even more petty. Plus, Miami made a statement against their biggest rival. Let’s recap the week,

It’s hard to believe how hard and how fast both Texas and Penn State have fallen this season.
Both teams’ first losses of the campaign — Texas by seven on the road at Ohio State and Penn State in overtime at home against Oregon — were respectable. Sure, in Penn State’s case is fed into the narrative that James Franklin can’t win the big ones, but still the Nittany Lions’ season was far from over.
Fast forward a week later, and they’re pretty much cooked. Franklin’s team suffered its second consecutive Big Ten loss on Saturday in one of the biggest regular-season upsets ever. UCLA had yet to lead for a single second all year, was 0-4, and had just fired its head coach and coordinators. Yet, the Bruins built up a big lead over Penn State at home and held on for the win.
Not only did Penn State lose, but the Nittany Lions looked ill-prepared at every turn.
Whether it was the weird, jet-sweep, read option play call on the vital fourth down late, the defense not being prepared for UCLA to take a safety, or the litany of excuses Head Coach James Franklin had after the loss, the entire operation just felt off. This was supposed to be Penn State’s year! Sure, it lost star pass rusher Abdul Carter and tight end Tyler Warren to the 2025 NFL Draft. But Penn State brought back virtually everyone else from last year’s semifinal run. The schedule lined up decently, while Ohio State, Michigan, and Oregon were breaking in new quarterbacks. Everything was falling into place. And now, Penn State is unranked in the first week of October.

But with two conference losses already on their resume, the worst loss of any two-loss playoff contender, and a trip to Columbus still on the schedule, the odds of him making a miracle title run like Ohio State did last year to save his job sure do look bleak. Anything short of that, and I’d be hard-pressed to think Penn State’s leadership won’t be looking for a change, and a big-name splash to take over in charge of the program.
As for Texas, it dropped a matchup on the road to a Florida team that has struggled for much of the year.
At this point of the year, it feels like quarterback Arch Manning isn’t the player any of us thought he was or could be. In fairness, Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian hasn’t done the greatest job this year, and ultimately, he’s the one who went with Manning. In the end, the quarterback play just has not been good enough.
And, if we’re being real about Sark, his situation feels very similar to James Franklin in that he’s a good head coach, but has failed to get it done when given the chance to take his team to the next level. I’m not sure Sarkisian is in the same level of danger as Franklin in terms of getting fired. But if this season continues its downward trajectory and next year doesn’t come with a playoff run, don’t rule out Texas trying to make a big splash.
Miami Makes A Statement
While Texas and Penn State keep trending downward, Miami seems to be heading in the opposite direction. The Canes started the year with a big win at home over Notre Dame, and they’ve only gotten better since.
Their latest statement came in a 28-22 win over Florida State. While the score was tight, the game didn’t feel nearly as close as it suggested. Miami Head Coach Mario Cristobal’s club controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball from start to finish, as they’ve done much of the year. Quarterback Carson Beck continues to look more comfortable every week, and his chemistry with the Hurricanes’ group of skill players is only getting stronger.
The visit to Tallahassee to take on Florida State was Miami’s biggest test of the season. While there are certainly a couple of potential trip-up spots going forward, their chances of running the table and getting a one-seed look that much better now that they’ve gotten by the Seminoles.
Also, for what it’s worth, I think dropping Florida State out of the top 25 despite both of their losses being ranked losses and owning a top-10 win by double digits seems a bit unfair.

At this point, the most successful NFL coach of all time should just call it a career. Whatever we’re seeing with Bill Belichick’s team at North Carolina just isn’t working. The latest loss came 38-10 at home at the hands of Clemson, who, up until this point, had been one of the biggest disappointments in all of college football.
Sure, Belichick turned over the roster quite a bit and raided the transfer portal, but still, the result of a brand new roster shouldn’t be this bad. You can make the case that he needs time to get his recruting classes in there and that he’s a developer, but like, with how bad this year has gone, do you think either side will even want Belichick to oversee this program for the next 2-3 years?
Plus, his petty wars with the New England Patriots have continued to a really weird point. Earlier this year, it was reported that Belichick banned Patriots personnel from being around the UNC football program. I’m sure players were thrilled to know that they were being cut off from one of 32 NFL teams. But now, according to 247’s Ross Martin, he went as far as to ban the social media team from even posting about the Patriots. Which, like, is very weird. Especially when UNC alum Drake Maye is taking off as one of the NFL’s top young quarterbacks and is fresh off a massive, primetime win over the league’s best team.
Shortly after the backlash of that story breaking, the Tar Heels posted about Maye. But it is worth noting that the post came after the report. Usually, these weird stories are easy to just brush aside, but this one is just believable enough and has just enough evidence to support it that it feels like there’s some legitimacy to it. Either way, I hope that after this year, Belichick and UNC realize this isn’t working and just mutually agree to call it quits.
