Four simple ways to weatherproof your coats and shoes this autumn ...Middle East

Sport by : (The Sun) -

AUTUMN has arrived, and with it, the inevitable wind and rain.

Before your favourite coats and shoes bear the brunt of bad weather, a few simple steps can keep them looking their best all season long.

GettyFind out how to properly care for suede shoes, which are notoriously vulnerable to water stains[/caption]

PROOF IT: A can of waterproofing spray is your first line of defence when it comes to weather protection.

Simply give clean, dry coats and shoes a light, even spray from about 15cm away, paying special attention to seams and stitching.

Always try on a hidden area first to ensure it is safe for the fabric. For a high-street bargain, get the DASCO protector spray at Shoe Zone for £3.99.

SUEDE SAVIOUR: Suede is a hot autumn trend this year but it’s notoriously vulnerable to water stains.

The key is to act fast.

If you’re wearing suede shoes and get caught in a shower, leave them to dry away from direct heat, then use a suede brush or a clean, dry, soft toothbrush to gently buff away any marks.

For black suede try Sneaky Suede Revive, usually £4.99, now £2.49 at amazon.co.uk, which can bring faded suede back to life.

STEP UP: Trainers often take the worst beating, but a simple routine can keep them fresh.

After a wet walk, stuff them with crumpled paper or newspaper, as it absorbs moisture from the inside and helps maintain their shape.

For a deeper clean, take out the removable insoles and wash them separately. A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth with a drop of washing-up liquid will tackle mud and grime before it sets in.

SMART STORAGE: Never put wet coats straight into a cramped wardrobe unless you want them to develop a musty, damp smell.

Instead, hang them on a sturdy padded hanger and air-dry properly.

It might also help to pick up the Status Dehumidifier at Poundland for £1, to store in the bottom of your wardrobe.

It will stop moisture from building up and help protect your entire wardrobe from the autumn chill.
