Prospects Paths to the NHL, Grzelcyk’s Roster Impact, Florida Fights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

We’ll start our Monday morning with a good piece from Ben Pope on Frank Nazar wanting more. Last year, his training camp and preseason games were very pedestrian. So the Blackhawks sent him to Rockford, where he dominated until he was called up. He was electric this year in the preseason — like a young player who knew what to expect against NHL players, and know his game translates to the highest level.

I think Nazar’s 2024-25 season is a good roadmap for all of us to keep in mind with Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene starting this season in Rockford. The Blackhawks continue to be very conservative with the timeline of their prospects, and they’ve got a few veterans in places where they need placeholders until those young guys are ready.

Frank Nazar was the Blackhawks' best player in the preseason — with 5 points in 4 games — but he wasn't satisfied."I think I can be a lot better… I need to stop on pucks, go through guys and stop reaching."That and more preseason takeaways: t.co/4JC42e3cCK

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 5, 2025 Along those lines, there were some comments on social media on Sunday in the wake of the Blackhawks announcing a one-year deal for defenseman Matt Grzelcyk that seemed to be out of place. I can completely appreciate any residual trauma from the Blackhawks signing TJ Brodie and Alec Martinez last year as placeholders until the young guys were ready on the blue line. Both of them were coming off down years and appeared near the end of their careers. Martinez ultimately retired at the end of last year. Brodie was bought out after spending most of the last quarter of the season in the press box. Grzelcyk is 31 and is coming off the best season of his career. He produced career highs in points (40), assists (39) and power play assists (15) while skating a career-high 20:37. He’s been a plus player his entire career (he was plus-46!! two years ago in Boston) before last year on a terrible Penguins team. At the end of the day, he’s got a contract with the Blackhawks because Chicago needed some insurance on the left side of the blue line with Alex Vlasic‘s status to start the season being TBD and none of the younger defensemen really making a strong enough case for the job. There really isn’t a reason to lose our minds over the Blackhawks signing a depth defenseman to a one-year, $1M deal. He won’t block anyone, and he can contribute when called upon. Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Also keep in mind that Ethan Del Mastro was not sent to Rockford with the rest of the guys who boarded the bus. New head coach Jeff Blashill talks about Del Mastro in similar ways to how Luke Richardson talked about Wyatt Kaiser at this time last year. The development clearly isn’t finished, but there are elements that coaches really like. Kaiser bounced back and forth between Chicago and Rockford, appearing in 17 games for the IceHogs. He finished the year strong and is now penciled in on the Blackhawks’ second defensive pair with Artyom Levshunov. Del Mastro has work to do to follow Kaiser’s path. The deadline for teams to submit their opening-day rosters is today at 4 PM CT. Lots of players on waivers on Saturday and Sunday. We’ll see if there are any last minute trades… The Blackhawks practice at noon CT in Florida today. We’ll see if Vlasic and Landon Slaggert are on the ice with the rest of the team. Slaggert missed most of the third period on Saturday night. Unfortunately, Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert left his second game at Boston University last night and did not return after the first period. It was an exhibition game against RPI, and BU head coach Jay Pandolfo sounded like it wasn’t a significant concern. Still something to keep an eye on this week.

Jay Pandolfo on Boisvert not returning after the first period:"Just precautionary. We were not going to put him back in tonight. It's not worth it."

— Boston Hockey Blog (@BOShockeyblog) October 5, 2025 The buzz in the NHL on Saturday night was the absolute gong show in Florida between the Lightning and Panthers. A goal was taken off the board because an ejected player was still playing and had an assist (somehow!) for the Panthers. Every game between these two teams was a mess this preseason. We’ll see how banged up the Panthers are after fight night on Saturday when they raise their banner and face the Blackhawks on Tuesday evening.

SIXTEEN players were ejected from tonight's Battle of Florida. The Lightning and Panthers combined for 312 penalty minutes. At one point, there were three skaters left on the Tampa bench. Story: t.co/YiwtF2HbMY

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) October 5, 2025 Tough news for the Winnipeg Jets, who lost Cole Perfetti to an ankle sprain to start the regular season. The Blackhawks are in Winnipeg on Oct. 30 for the first matchup with Jonathan Toews’ new team.

Cole Perfetti suffered an ankle sprain and is considered week to week, according to #NHLJets coach Scott Arniel.

— Mike McIntyre (@mikemcintyrewpg) October 5, 2025 The Sharks made another interesting cap dump trade on Sunday. The Flyers sent the contract of physically retired Ryan Ellis ($6.25M cap hit) to the Sharks, which saves Philadelphia from needing to operate in LTIR. The Sharks add Ellis’ cap hit to the previously acquired Carey Price dead money ($10.5M).

TRADE The #SJSharks acquire defenseman Ryan Ellis and a 2026 conditional 6th round pick from the Flyers for Carl Grundstrom and Artem Guryev.
