The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is gearing up for its biggest season yet, with the 2025 edition confirmed to take place from December 1 to 23 across Colombo, Kandy, and Dambulla.

The sixth edition of the tournament was postponed but was confirmed to take place with a thought of aligning ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 next year. In what promises to be a landmark year, the tournament will stretch over 24 days, the longest season in its history, and for the first time, will feature participation from Indian cricketers. Their names are expected to be revealed soon.

The expanded LPL calendar, however, will see it go head-to-head with other major global leagues, including Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) and the UAE’s ILT20.Despite

Despite the competition, the organisers are confident that the timing will help the LPL serve as an ideal build-up ahead of the 2026 Cricket World Cup. Tournament Director Samantha Dodanwela said the scheduling was intentional to “give players maximum exposure and top-quality match practice before a global cricketing year,” while also emphasising that the league continues to act as a platform for unearthing fresh Sri Lankan talent.

With 24 matches, including 20 league games and four playoffs, the LPL’s sixth edition will feature five franchises battling it out in a familiar round-robin format. While LPL will operate from December 1 to 23, the ILT20 is scheduled to be held from December 2, 2025, to January 4, 2026. Meanwhile, the Big Bash League (BBL) will be played between December 14 to January 25.

The Jaffna Kings are the defending champions of the LPL, having won the tournament in its 2024 edition. Led by Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka, Jaffa defeated Galle Titans with Rilee Rossouw hitting a century in the final.
