Dillon Gabriel was asked about Shedeur Sanders’ viral ‘mime’ interview.
Gabriel, who is now the Cleveland Brown’s starting quarterback after veteran Joe Flacco was demoted, remained tight-lipped as his fellow rookie continues to make headlines.
Shedeur Sanders has remained the QB3 amid Gabriel’s promotion to QB1GETTYSanders went viral on Wednesday after he decided to mouth silent answers to reporters’ questions about Gabriel replacing Flacco as Chicago’s QB1.
The 23-year-old son of Prime Time Deion Sanders, who remains the team’s third string quarterback, told the media last week that he is “ready to play” and he feels he could play better than many starting QBs in the NFL right now.
Gabriel reacts to Sanders’ theatrics with defiant message
As Gabriel and the Browns prepare for their game in London against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot asked the rookie about Sanders’ antics, which she called a ‘pantomime’.
As is often the case with Gabriel, he gave a poised answer.
“For me, we’re a team,” he began.
“We do this as a unit,” he added in a six-word statement.
“We can only control what we can control, and I don’t want to speak for anyone in particular.”
Gabriel has rarely caused much of a fuss with his interviews, except for when many thought he took a dig at Sanders back in August.
“There’s entertainers and there’s competitors, and I totally understand that,” Gabriel said after a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gabriel later clarified he was talking about the media.
Shedeur’s family defends him amid intense criticism
Unsurprisingly, Sanders has faced criticism for his interview, with some slamming the quarterback for being ‘immature’.
Shedeur Sanders has kept tight-lipped about his lack of NFL minutesGETTY Dillon Gabriel is the Browns QB1 and will make his first start against the VikingsGETTY“I believe that Shedeur’s response was immature,” former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho said on the Speakeasy show.
“Shedeur’s response was what we do when our significant other says, ‘Hey, can you give me a second?'”
However, Shedeur’s family have leapt to his defense, starting with brother, Deion Sanders Jr.
“People that ‘blend in’ trying to teach people that ‘stand out’ how to ‘blend in.’ Basically, advice on how to be average,” Deion Jr cryptically posted on X.
Meanwhile, Sanders’ sister directly addressed criticisms of him.
“It’s a problem when he talk and it’s a problem when he don’t lol make it make sense,” she wrote on Instagram.

Gabriel will know there is little room for error as he begins life as a starting NFL quarterback.
The Browns are a franchise like no other when it comes to quarterbacks, as Gabriel is Cleveland’s 41st starting signal caller since the franchise returned to the NFL in 1999 — the most in the league over that period.
And after Flacco failed to impress in his first four start, should Gabriel not provide an immediate improvement, it won’t be long before the calls for Sanders to start intensify even more.
