ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A memorial service, “Say Their Names,” took place in Rochester Friday to honor those killed by police.
Elders & Allies to Free the People Roc recognized 52 victims of police violence from across the U.S., ranging in age from 4 to 70 years old. The service included seven individuals from the Rochester community.
The memorial service was held at Genesee Valley Park. Organizers discussed the impact of mass incarceration, saying it has created a class system in the U.S. They acknowledged progress in racial justice but emphasized that more work remains.
“The community is starting to wake up, but we have a lot of work to do,” said James Thompson from Elders & Allies. “We come here to mourn, but we also come to encourage people to join with us as we join with Free the People when they started marching in 2020 after the killing of George Floyd and Daniel Prude.”
Thompson encouraged those interested in racial justice to join organizations that protect minorities, advocate for living wages, and preserve the environment.
