"They thought it was great, and I guess they were right, because it was a very popular video," she added. "But what was interesting about that — and this was a thing where in your career, you see, because I had all that makeup on, and I'm not really in the video that much, I did not become more recognizable or well-known as an artist as a result of having a huge hit record. And that was weird. But I noticed it was like, wow, you know, like people didn't almost kind of put the two together."

Why Patty Smyth turned down Eddie Van Halen's offer to replace David Lee Roth

"They were heavy drinkers. I don’t drink. I never saw myself living in L.A. I was like, 'I’m from New York, we don’t move to L.A.,'" she told Stereogum in 2020.

Smyth would go on to release a self-titled solo album in 1992 which featured one of her most well-known songs, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," a duet with the Eagles' Don Henley, and — in a surprising twist — got back together with Scandal in 2004 on VH1’s Bands Reunited. As for Van Halen, Sammy Hagar took Roth's place...and the rest is rock history.
