The No. 11-ranked Alabama men’s golf team finished in sixth place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, on Sept. 29 and 30.

“We had a great week of preparation coming into this tournament,” head coach Jay Seawell said. “This was a tournament that certainly helps you identify where you are as a program. There were some really good teams, and playing at a place like Colonial Country Club, which is championship and historic venue, you find out quickly where you are as a program.”

Sophomore William Jennings led the charge, finishing tied for first place at 1-under-par over the 54-hole event, shooting back-to-back 1-under-par rounds of 69, followed by a 1-over-par 71. Jennings had an opportunity to take home first place alone, but ultimately fell short in a five-man playoff.

“I thought William played great all week, and I am really proud of his continued improvement,” Seawell said. “He had a chance to win medalist honors in the playoff at the end, and that was fun to watch him compete.”

Team captain Jonathan Griz finished in 32nd place with an opening round of 77, 7-over-par, followed by a 68, 2-under par, and finished his tournament off with an even par round of 70.

Connor Brown, a graduate student, opened up his tournament with a 2-over-par round of 72. In round two, he shot a 79, 9-over-par, and concluded his tournament with an even par round of 70 to finish tied for 52nd place.

Junior Brycen Jones, who was making his debut for the Crimson Tide, finished tied for 34th and got things started in round one with a 3-over-par round of 73. In round two, he shot an even par round of 70 thanks to three straight birdies on the back nine, and finished things off in round three with another 3-over-par round of 70.

Luke Powell, a junior, shot back-to-back 4-over-par rounds of 74 in the first two rounds. On the third and final day, he put together a 3-over-par round of 73 to finish tied with his teammate Brown in 52nd place.

“This team continues to make strides and believe we can be a championship-caliber program,” Seawell said. “We were able to do some good things this week, we competed well and gave ourselves a chance to win, and I thought we responded after a tough first round. There are still a lot of things to work on and earn, but I am proud of the way we played throughout the week.”

The Crimson Tide’s next, final event of the fall will be Fallen Oak Collegiate from Oct. 18 to 20 in Saucier, Mississippi.
