There were eight matches played across the top four tiers of English league football on 18 August 1987, and none of the home teams were victorious, with Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth and Luton all failing to win at home in Division One, while there were four winless home teams in the second tier in Blackburn Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, Oldham Athletic and Stoke City.
At the time of writing, fewer than half of the matches played in the top four tiers in 2025-26 have ended in home wins (43% – 167 of 388), with only 2020-21 (40.1%) producing a lower rate in the last 10 seasons.
In addition to the 10 winless home sides in the EFL on Tuesday night, all six matches in the National League (English fifth tier) also ended without a single home win, with two draws and four away victories.
With none of the 16 teams with home advantage winning a game in any of the top five tiers of English football, 30 September 2025 really was a night to forget for home teams.
