— MLB (@MLB) September 30, 2025The team’s first playoff win in EIGHT years.
The Cubs scored in ways big (dingers) and small (sac but, sac fly) today, which is exactly what you have to be able to do at Wrigley Field, especially against very good pitching.
And the Cubs, of course, showed off quite a bit of good pitching of their own. Matthew Boyd was solid through 4.1, getting the very early hook (which was the right call, considering the match-ups, the bullpen availability, and the short series), and then the bullpen was nails.
Nick Pivetta actually executed exceptionally well today, locating his pitches consistently, and getting so many whiffs and ugly takes. His only problem was that each of Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly got up on four-seamers at the top of the zone – neither was even a bad pitch – and drove them out of the park. That’s what you have to do when a guy is having so much success at the top of the zone (easier said than done).

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) September 30, 2025How about Dansby Swanson’s defense today?
Things could’ve gotten really dodgy in the 2nd inning when the Padres scored a run on back-to-back doubles to open the frame, and a bad bounce on a throw wound up putting that second runner at third with nobody out. But Swanson made a brilliant diving play to get the first out, and then Boyd pitched out of it. Swanson did it again in the third, catching one in shallow center on the run, and then quickly getting the ball home to prevent a run from scoring at third with one out.

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 30, 2025Considering that Swanson also scored an insurance run on a Nico Hoerner sac fly, I think you can make the case for the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game honors to go to Swanson.
Assuming you don’t give it to the bullpen as a whole, of course, because they were *perfect* today. Literally perfect, for 5.2 innings. Special shouts to Daniel Palencia for 1.2 dominant innings to bridge it to the rest of the pen. Two weeks ago, it looked like Palencia’s season might be over with a shoulder injury. And today, he did THAT. Yo.
