With a new coach and a new roster, the University of Northern Colorado wrestling team makes its first appearance in about month’s time for the 2025-26 season.
UNC hired head coach Teyon Ware in July to replace Troy Nickerson, who left the program after 11 years to be the coach at Army West Point.
The Bears open the year with their annual Blue and Gold scrimmage at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 at Bank of Colorado Arena.
The following week, the team starts the season with matches at North Carolina State (Saturday, Nov. 8) and the University of North Carolina (Nov. 9).
UNC’s first home dual match is Dec. 19 against Campbell University.
The University of Northern Colorado announced the hire of former Oklahoma wrestler and Sooners' assistant coach Teyon Ware as the new head coach of the Bears program in July 2025. Ware was a two-time NCAA champion at Oklahoma and a 4-time NCAA All-American. (UNC Athletics).Coach Ware will lead the Bears in his first official home dual on (Dec. 19) against Campbell University. Ware’s assistants are Earl Hall, who was with the program under Nickerson, and Charles Jones. Jr.
Greeley’s Andrew Alirez, an NCAA champion in 2023, is no longer with the program after using up his college eligibility last season. Vinny Zerban and Stevo Poulin, both All-Americans last years, are also no longer with the program. They transferred to Iowa State after Nickerson’s departure for Army.
The Bears have another locally trained athlete to lead the team in senior Dominick Serrano at 133 pounds. Serrano is from Windsor and Windsor High School. Like Alirez, he was a four-time state high school champion.
Other local athletes on the roster this year are: sophomore Mikai Alirez, a state champion from Greeley Central and Andrew’s brother, at 133 pounds; and junior Kilian Schultz at 165 from Severance and Severance High School.

Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 3-4 — at Southern Scuffle, University Tennessee Chattanooga.

Sunday, Jan. 18 — vs. Arizona State, 2 p.m. at Bank of Colorado Arena (Big 12 Conference).
