San Siro will surpass 100 years of history before it’s demolishedAFPInter chairman Giuseppe Marotta recently called for the ‘dilapidated, antiquated structure’ to be demolished and rebuilt like Wembley.
This is now a realistic prospect as according to Reuters, Milan City Council have agreed to sell the stadium and it’s surrounding land.
A €197million [£172m] sale to Milan and Inter has been approved, one that is set to bring demolition and construction of a new stadium.
The clubs released a joint statement to express their delight with the deal and outlook for the future.
“AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano are pleased with the city council’s approval of the sale of the San Siro and its surrounding area: a historic and decisive step for the future of the clubs and the city.
“Awaiting the official confirmation of the council’s decision by the city government, the clubs look ahead with confidence and responsibility to the next steps of the process that will lead to the creation of a new stadium meeting the highest international standards – a world-class facility destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan and a symbol of the passion of football fans around the world.”
The San Siro sale is due to be confirmed upon the completion of due diligence, which The Athletic say could be at the start of November.
Most of the stadium is set to be completely demolished, with around 10 per cent remaining.
Architecture firms Foster + Partners and MANICA have agreed to work with Milan and Inter over plans for their new stadium.
However, it’s not yet clear where the clubs will play matches during the demolition and construction phases.

History of San Siro
Opened in 1926, the San Siro was first owned by Milan before being obtained by the city council midway through the 1930s.
Inter, who split from their rivals at the beginning of the century, moved into the stadium in 1947 after playing at Arena Civica.
It was named after Milanese star Giuseppe Meazza, who scored 284 goals in 408 games for Inter and then played for Milan, in 1980.
Their fans called it Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, although they and their rivals have mostly referred to it as San Siro.
