Sheffield Wednesday’s players may refuse to train in protest over more unpaid wages in September, talkSPORT understands.
The Owls, who sit second from bottom in the Championship, are one of England’s crisis clubs at the moment.
It follows an awful summer for the club, which saw 13 first-team players leave, with concerns the club wouldn’t be able to field a team of senior players until some very late arrivals.
However, not a single penny was spent on transfers because the club are under a fee restriction embargo until the end of the 2026/27 winter transfer window because of late payments. Manager Danny Rohl also departed under a cloud.
The club’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, has repeatedly failed to pay players, staff and the EFL for money owed.
One of the stands at Hillsborough also had to be closed after an order from the council.
Now talkSPORT understands that they players were told that September’s wages will not be paid on time.
As a result, they are understood to be considering whether to refuse to train following their clash with Birmingham on Tuesday night.
This delayed payment is the latest in a long line of shambolic off-field issues that started in 2020 when the club were docked 12 points for breaching the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability rules.
They won promotion to the Championship in 2023 but were placed under transfer embargo soon after for failed payments to HMRC.
This led to a bizarre public statement from Chansiri in which he asked fans to contribute towards the payment.
He said: “If 20,000 people gave £100, then it’s £2m, and it’d be clear – so we can finish it. That would cover everything, HMRC and the wages.
Chansiri has owned Wednesday since 2015, but the fans want him goneGetty“You do not understand how important this club is to me and my family. I have been here nine years and it is a part of my life.”
The debt was settled, but October last year saw another embargo for the same offence. And in June this year, the EFL charged the club with failing to fulfil their obligations after the players weren’t paid on time or in full in March and May.
And now, they aren’t going to be paid on time again.
The EFL are desperate for a solution, but Chansiri still hasn’t sold the club despite fan protests and interest from former Crystal Palace owner John Textor.
In a statement in August, the EFL said: “The league wants to see a strong, stable and competitive Sheffield Wednesday, and for that to happen we are clear that the current owner needs either to fund the club to meet its obligations or make good on his commitment to sell to a well-funded party, for fair market value – ending the current uncertainty and impasse.
“We continue to pursue options available to us to resolve the current challenges, and to that end the league is currently in advanced discussions with Mr Chansiri’s legal advisers on formalising a process around divestment of his shareholding in the club.”
Bannan is a Wednesday legend, but he’s had enough of the off-field nonsenseGettyWhat do the players think?
One thing you expect as a professional in any job is to be paid on time, but it has now failed to consistently happen at Wednesday.
And captain Barry Bannan revealed all on talkSPORT Breakfast earlier in September.
The interview happened before this latest payment delay, but the Scotsman makes some excellent points about the club he signed a new deal with in the summer.
He said: “Through the summer and pre-season, I’ve been asking questions and it’s got to the point, really, where I’ve had to stop asking questions because I’m not getting anywhere.
“I’m just concentrating on the football and trying to get the lads together and happy, and the manager (Henrik Pedersen), at the minute is obviously doing a great job.
“It’s crazy. I remember speaking to one of my mates yesterday. You should never ever be getting to payday as a Championship player and (be) wondering if you’re going to get paid or not.
“It’s mental. It’s got to the point where it’s that big now that it’s between the EFL and even the government.”
