Josh Blackwell delivered a core memory for Chicago Bears fans with a blocked field goal that sealed the team’s Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
I can watch this on loop…

Blocking a field goal is an art form. There is so much work that goes into it. As fans, we only see the end result. But thankfully, Josh Blackwell shared the inside scoop with Jeff Joniak on Marquee after the game:
Bears long snapper Scott Daly told Josh Blackwell the Raiders long snapper moved the ball before every snap Blackwell blocked the Raiders' go-ahead field goal! pic.twitter.com/gp20gIONQC
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 29, 2025Words from Blackwell:
“Throughout the week, Scott Daly had given us a little tip with the snapper. He would move the ball right before he would snap it. And the first two, we got really good jumps. I’m like, ‘I’m close. I’m going to get one.’ HT (Bears Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower) was like ‘we got to get this kick blocked’ and I got a good jump.”

This is why the “teamwork makes the dream work” adage isn’t something that should fall on deaf ears. Bears long snapper Scott Daly keyed Josh Blackwell into a potential tell that could be helpful in a game. Then, Blackwell used it in the game’s most critical moment. The Bears gave Blackwell a game ball for the blocked field goal, and it was deserved. But Scott Daly deserves something (more than a pat on the back) for getting the wheels turning and putting it in motion.

Josh Blackwell signed a two-year extension with the Bears back during the offseason. The deal might have raised some eyebrows at the time because extending a special teams ace isn’t top of mind when NFL free agency rolls around in March. But as it turns out, the Blackwell extension is already paying off. I love watching special teams contributors make splash plays. And my adoration grows exponentially when said splash plays preserve a Chicago Bears victory. That it was Blackwell coming through in the clutch makes it even better.
Josh Blackwell went undrafted out of Duke in 2022, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent, and was part of the team’s final round of roster cuts in August. One day after the Eagles parted ways with Blackwell, he landed with the Bears as a waiver claim and has made the most of his time in Chicago by carving out a niche as a core special teams member and an occasional contributor as a nickel cornerback. Kudos to whichever Bears scouts nudged GM Ryan Poles into using a waiver claim on Blackwell because it has paid off in big ways over the last few seasons.
The blocked field goal in Week 4 feels like just the tip of the iceberg for Josh Blackwell. Last year, he made waves with his first career interception in the Bears’ win against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London and with a 94-yard punt return in the team’s win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 18. The touchdown return earned him NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. And I imagine more are on the way because pulling through with a game-winning blocked field goal should lead to some more hardware once those awards for Week 4 are announced. Maybe Blackwell will be spending time making room in his trophy case during the Bears’ bye week.
