For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Hannah Carpenter of Hernando, Mississippi has announced her commitment to swim and study at Arizona State University, starting in the fall of 2027. She trains year-round with Memphis Tiger Swimming and attends Northpoint Christian School.
Carpenter, who is the university’s first publicized recruit for the class of 2031, made the announcement on Instagram:
I am so excited to finally announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University! Thank you to my friends, family, teammates and coaches at Memphis Tigers who have helped me grow as a swimmer and a person. Thank you to Coach Herbie, Coach Alex and the rest of the coaches at Arizona State for giving me this incredible opportunity. Beyond excited for this next chapter. FORKS UP !
Carpenter is a versatile swimmer who specializes predominantly in backstroke and IM. She focused on middle-distance freestyle over the past few seasons, but has recently shown the most improvement in backstroke and IM events.
Her progression this year was huge—she sliced over 2.5 seconds off her 200 back from her pre-season time of 2:02.55, and dropped over 5.5 seconds in the 200 IM from her pre-season mark of 2:07.17. Her 400 IM also saw massive improvement, cutting over 5 seconds from her pre-season time of 4:29.98.
Her target meet for the 2024-25 high school season was the Tennessee Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (TISCA) State Championship in February. There, she was the runner-up in the 200 IM with her current lifetime best of 2:01.63, and took fifth in the 500 free at 4:58.09, less than a second off her 4:57.24 logged at the 2024 edition of the meet when she won gold.
She wrapped up her season with her club team at the NCSA Spring Championship a little over a month later, where she touched 15th in the 400 IM (4:24.78) and 34th in the 200 back (2:00.42), both personal best times.
She also swam some off events, logging a PB of 26.94 for 53rd in the 50 back, 56.56 in the 100 back (57th), 1:05.79 in the 100 breast (62nd), and 2:24.82 in the 200 breast (67th). She was way off her best in the 200 IM though, finishing 121st in 2:10.82.
Top SCY Times: 200 Backstroke: 2:00.42 200 IM: 2:01.63 400 IM: 4:24.78Arizona State just wrapped up their first season as a member of the Big 12 Conference and has established itself as the new superpower, winning by over 455 points ahead of 2nd-place University of Arizona. This came after Texas left for the Southeastern Conference following last season. The Sun Devils went on to take 19th out of 43 teams at the NCAA Championships to cap off the season, a five spot leap from their 24th place showing in 2024.
The Big 12 Championships feature ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ finals, and Carpenter already projects to be an immediate scorer with two full years of swimming to go before arriving in Tempe. Her lifetime best in the 200 IM would have ranked her 16th out of prelims in 2025, sliding her into the ‘B’ final. Her bests in the 400 IM and 200 back are right on the scoring bubble as well, as it took 4:24.08 and 1:59.84 to make the top 24 and advance to the ‘C’ final last season.
According to the teams 2024-25 depth chart, Carpenter would have ranked seventh in the 200 IM and eighth in both the 400 IM and 200 back. Senior Charli Brown led the IMs with marks of 1:57.08 and 4:07.58, while graduate student Caroline Bentz logged 1:51.89 to top the 200 back rankings.
