ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A blood drive Saturday is honoring a fallen Rochester Police officer who made enormous contributions to the local community.
The American Red Cross on University Avenue will be holding a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to honor Officer Manuel Ortiz, who lost his life six years ago in an accident as he was heading to work.
Ortiz was an active volunteer at Red Cross, often giving his time and support to help out local blood drives.
The event a part of the City of Rochester’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. At last year’s blood drive, News10NBC spoke with Executive Vice President of the Rochester Police Locust Club Paul Dondorfer, who said Ortiz was “not only an icon in the Rochester Police Department but he was certainly an icon in the Hispanic community.”
