IRVINE — Dylan Elmer may not have walked off the field with the homecoming queen on Friday, but the junior put on a kingly performance in an impressive victory by University.
While apparently setting a school passing record, Elmer threw for 341 yards to lead the Trojans to a 34-7 nonleague victory over Glenn of Norwalk.
University improved to 2-3 overall; Glenn dropped to 2-4.
Elmer skipped the last two possessions, but still walked away 14 of 23 passing with three touchdowns and an interception. The 341 yards – which must be verified by the program – eclipsed the 334 yards by Koa Saito in 2023.
“It’s a great feeling,” Elmer said. “In the first half, it definitely felt like a record-setting game. The big game, homecoming night, the hard work we’ve been putting in, and bouncing back from the last two games felt good.”
Elmer said that “going down on our first drive and scoring set the tone.”

He entered the game averaging 156 yards per game.
There was almost a second record set. Receiver Cruz McMullens caught six passes for 214 yards — a 35.7 average. But McMullens fell short of Bronson Taylor’s 234-yard performance set in 2008.
“On a lot of my deep balls, there was good accuracy (by Elmer),” McMullens said. “His reads were good.”
McMullens had receptions of 10, 38, 36, 33, 68 and 31 yards.
The 68-yarder — the only one for a score — stunned Glenn. Uni had taken possession at its 22 with 34 seconds left in the half. A couple of runs and incomplete pass later, Elmer went long and the Trojans went into halftime with a 28-7 lead.
The touchdown before that one, however, was pivotal.
At the five-yard line and on the verge of taking a 21-0 lead, Elmer had a pass intercepted and returned 101 yards by Okoro Lee to cut the Glenn deficit to 14-7 with 14:13 left in the half. That made it competitive, a game that Glenn was still very much in.
But on the ensuing possession, Elmer hit McMullens for 38 yards and then Zion Barreto had runs of 7 and 1, the latter being a TD with 2:02 left. In three plays and 62 yards, Uni had stolen any momentum that Glenn may have had.
University added to its lead in the the second half, albeit modestly as coach Vince Mesa had his squad “working on some things.”
Actually, the defense got a chance to light up the scoreboard as Deondre Miller recovered a fumble at the 15 and returned it for a touchdown and a 34-7 lead. Two plays later, Charlie Carmichael’s interception ended another Glenn drive, with 4:58 left, and the second team came on to close it out.
University was impressive from the outset, driving 70 yards on the opening possession and scoring on Elmer’s eight-yard pass to Arvin Jahangiri (five catches, 84 yards). The second drive ended the same way, with Jahangiri catching a 37-yard scoring strike over the middle on the second play of the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Importantly, the defense turned in a terrific performance as well, giving Uni its most complete performance of the season.
After two straight losses for his team, Mesa said: “We needed a game to get some momentum going.”
They got it. And a lot more.
