"We want to make sure this is a clear example of what the standards are legally and make sure that we are protecting our pets by enforcing the laws," said San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.

District Attorney Jenkins emphasized the importance of cleanliness in pet facilities, noting the potential for bacteria to cause diseases and infections.

As part of the settlement, Wag Hotels will pay $75,000 in civil penalties and $75,000 in investigative costs.

The settlement also includes conditions for Wag Hotels to improve animal safety, employee training, and supervision of dogs in playgroups.

Wag Hotels provided the following statement to KRON4:

We reached a mutual settlement with these agencies in which Wag admits no wrongdoing for isolated incidents that occurred several years ago that are exceptions to the hundreds of thousands of visits to our facilities over our 20-year history and have been addressed by the practices we have in place. We are pleased to have reached a favorable resolution that fully reflects the commitment of the governmental entities and Wag Hotels to provide the high standard of pet care to the pets and people we serve.

We appreciate the collaboration and professionalism by the District Attorneys’ and San Francisco City Attorney’s offices throughout the process. Resolving the matter in this fashion will allow us to avoid the cost and distraction of litigation so we can continue to focus on the exceptional care, safety and service we are known for. Wag Hotels’ dedicated caregivers are passionate about providing our furry guests and their parents with the loving care that has made us their trusted choice for their pet’s daycare, boarding and grooming needs.

DA Jenkins said the settlement will allow for better oversight.

"Whether it's the creation of an animal welfare department, requirements that they retain video surveillance footage inside the pet hotels, that they keep data on how many incidents of dog bites and other things are taking place in their facilities so we can again be able to audit later whether or not additional changes need to happen in their facilities," said Jenkins.
