Ilia Topuria fancies his chances for the headline spot on the UFC White House card.
Ever since the UFC CEO, Dana White, has teamed up with US President, Donald Trump, to organise a historic UFC card, it’s been a hot topic across the promotion.
Topuria won his second UFC title last month by knocking out Charles OliveiraGettyJon Jones even immediately reversed his retirement decision in the hopes of being included in the historic plans.
Both Jones and McGregor also re-entered the UFC’s drug testing pool, as they quickly found themselves in contention for a spot as the UFC White House‘s headliner.
In light of that, White made it very clear that he would trust McGregor over Jones with the opportunity, due to his tensions with the latter in the past.
Following that development, the Irishman has claimed that he will return from his four-year hiatus to fight Michael Chandler at the event.
But, in a recent post on X, Topuria has since expressed his confidence that he can overtake front-runner McGregor for the spot at the top of the card.
Teasing McGregor, Topuria wrote: “Who wants to bet with me that I’m the main event at the White House?”
That being said, the UFC boss has reiterated on numerous occasions that he won’t be putting any fights together for the event until early 2026.
The prestigious event is expected to take place in June, as part of the 250th celebrations of American Independence next year.
Who is more likely to headline the UFC White House card out of Conor McGregor and Ilia Topuria?
McGregor would certainly say he is, having already stated who he will be fighting and the staggering payday he will allegedly be receiving for the match-up.
Should he actually find himself headlining, he will end a hiatus of four years from the octagon.
Topuria is the UFC’s lightweight champion, having previously ruled the featherweight divisionGettyThe 37-year-old broke his leg back in his trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier in 2021 and we haven’t seen him in the Octagon since.
So, if we are going on probability based off of recent activity, Topuria takes a significant lead.
As the last time we saw Topuria was when he claimed the UFC lightweight title back in June.
When he flattened Charles Oliveira, he also become the promotion’s latest two-weight champion.
In his career thus far ‘El Matador’ remains unbeaten, and discussion has began over who will be his next opponent.
Should Topuria’s bet ring true, we could see him defending his title in the main event of the UFC White House card.
Lightweights Arman Tsarukyan and Justin Gaethje seem to be the more likely opponents for his next outing, despite Paddy Pimblett continuing to publicise his desire to fight the champ.
