Bryson DeChambeau on verge of tears in Ryder Cup press conference when talking about teammates’ actions ...Middle East

Bryson DeChambeau hailed his USA teammates for their unwavering support on the eve of the Ryder Cup.

The mercurial LIV star was accused of being a ‘captain’s nightmare’ by respected golf analyst Brandel Chamblee ahead of the tournament.

DeChambeau’s selflessness was questioned, with a pointed suggestion he was more concerned with growing his YouTube audience.

If ‘The Scientist’ isn’t a team player, he is doing a pretty good impression of one.

“This go around, the amount of calls I got when I saw I was on the team from the players was amazing,” he told reporters in an emotional press conference.

“The support from the vice-captains and every player, texting me and calling me and welcoming me onto the team was quite emotional for me.

“It made me more passionate about this team and excited to be a part of what we’re trying to accomplish this week, what we can accomplish this week, what we will.”

DeChambeau clapped back at Chamblee on Wednesday.

“Did Brandel say something yesterday? I don’t know what it was,” he said into the camera as he signed autographs for fans in a viral social media clip.

Chamblee also inferred that DeChambeau inflated his viewing figures, which the big-hitting star addressed on Thursday.

“I responded jokingly just a little bit ago, I think it was a couple days ago. I think it’s great. I think any time that people can throw stuff at me like that, I enjoy it. I appreciate it. I think it’s good for ultimately the game of golf because it starts to spur conversation on,” he said.

“Ultimately, on YouTube, you have to be verified to be able to subscribe and what not. So I don’t think it’s really that honest or true. But it is what it is.

“I mean, any time you can say something like that and create more buzz for the game of golf, it’s great.”

Team USA rallies behind Bryson DeChambeau

DeChambeau had plenty of support from the teammates he supposedly cares little about.

“He’s a tremendous competitor,” insisted world No.1 Scottie Scheffler.

“He’s a great partner as well. He’s a great guy, he’s a good friend. He’s been great in our team room. He brings a lot of energy, and the people love him.

“Being an American means a lot to him and I’m excited to kind of unleash him this week.”

J.J. Spaun is playing in his first Ryder Cup — it will be DeChambeau’s third after he was gutted to miss out on the last edition.

“Well, I think what people don’t realize, he’s made a huge effort being a part of this team, flying to team dinners, showing up weeks that he’s playing on the LIV to where we are on the PGA Tour just to be a part of that team, and he’s done a great job,” U.S. Open champion Spaun said.

“He’s got his own thing going on, and it’s easy for us to get together because we’re all playing week in and week out together.

“I think he’s done a huge job of trying to insert himself on this team. Given his personality and his brand, he’s great with the fans. I think that’s going to be a huge attribute to the team this week.”

Keegan Bradley has made it clear that he regards DeChambeau, who was spotted trying to drive the 397-yard first hole in a practice round, as his ace in the hole.

It is an opinion Scheffler shares.

“I was telling Keegan. I feel like Bryson could be the difference for us in a strange way from the standpoint of feeding into these fans, the style of golf he plays,” added Scheffler.

“And also how I’ll make a putt, and you won’t see too much of a reaction. That’s just who I am. That’s kind of how I operate.

“But Bryson is like, this is his arena. If he views himself as a gladiator golfer, this is as good as it gets.

“He’s been awesome. He’s been awesome in the team room. I’m excited to see what he can do, and hopefully get a lot of points up on the board because his points might hit harder than maybe my points, for example, just because of how he might celebrate and get these fans into this tournament quickly.”

DeChambeau is saying and doing all the right things.

On Friday the talking stops and he will aim to answer the critics with a club in his hand as a raucous home crowd bellows at his every move.

He wouldn’t have it any other way.
