In a release Wednesday, the Illinois Department of Public Health says it is “deeply concerned” about the administration’s new guidance cautioning pregnant women about taking the pain and fever-relieving medication, saying that linking such use to autism is “not backed by the full weight of scientific evidence.”
“There is no link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism,” IDPH officials said. “Acetaminophen (Tylenol) has been established as a safe pain reliever and fever reducer for use during pregnancy. Untreated fevers are clearly associated with pregnancy complications.”
The department also criticized President Donald Trump’s recommendation that pregnant women should “tough out” pain and fevers during pregnancy, and urged women to take the medication in consultation with their doctors.
“Pregnant people should not ‘tough it out.’ Pregnant people and children can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) as needed and as directed by their healthcare provider,” IDPH officials said.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker sounded similar thoughts after the announcement by the administration this week.
“No evidence. No science. No solutions,” he said. “Just Trump peddling another dangerous lie — this time about Tylenol and autism — that sows chaos, scares parents, and puts our health at risk.”
