In the 1970s, Michael Gray was a teen idol and star of the CBS Saturday morning series Shazam! But before landing the role of Billy Batson in the hit superhero series, the actor played Marcia Brady’s boyfriend in a 1973 episode of The Brady Bunch. The episode remains a fan favorite more than 50 years later.
The episode, titled “Marcia Gets Creamed,” originally aired on Oct. 26, 1973. It features Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormick) getting a job at an ice cream parlor, interfering with her plans with her boyfriend Jeff (Gray). In one of the most memorable scenes in the episode, Jeff brings another girl into the ice cream shop to make Marcia jealous and orders two “Lover’s Delights.” Marcia asks if the two want whipped cream, then purposely fires the can directly at them.
Gray, who died on Oct. 16 at age 75, looked back on his Brady Bunch role in a 2023 interview with Pop Culture Retro, where he called the experience “special” to him.
“They called my agency and said, ‘Michael, would you like to come on and play Marcia’s boyfriend in an episode of The Brady Bunch,’” he recalled. “I said, ‘Of course.’ So I went out to the studio and I shot it. It was great, especially working with Maureen McCormick was fantastic, and many of the other cast members. It was great. I loved doing it, and it was fun because she squirted me with whipped cream because I was cheating on her. She said, ‘Do you want whipped cream on your ice cream?’ I said, ‘Sure.’ She put whipped cream all over my chest.”
Gray told the Classic Conversations podcast that he never had to audition for The Brady Bunch role. He noted that the whipped cream scene took a couple of takes.
“She sprayed one time, got me all over the place and got my date, who I shouldn’t have been dating somebody else that was supposedly dating her,” Gray said of McCormick’s character. “That’s why she got mad at me and sprayed whipped cream. So we both got covered with whipped cream. Maureen McCormick was very nice. She was such a nice lady to work with. She really was. I loved doing the episode.”
Gray also clarified that there was never any off-screen romance with McCormick despite the fun they had together on set.

Brady Bunch stars Barry Williams and Christopher Knight once recapped the “Marcia Gets Creamed” episode on their Real Brady Bros. podcast, where they praised Gray’s very ‘70s look, which included a ‘skin-tight sweater top and low hip huggers with a big, wide thick belt.” “All in monochromatic blue,” Williams said.
Williams recalled Gray as a “good actor” with “early rock star” good looks reminiscent of David Cassidy and Donny Osmond.
“And the hair thing,” The Brady Bunch star added. “I mean, really, David Cassidy would have to have been jealous. Because it was the same style but much thicker. I mean the guy had hair.”
Less than a year after appearing in The Brady Bunch, Gray made his debut as Billy Batson on Shazam!. The series premiered on Sept. 7, 1974, on CBS.
