Wayne Rooney has hailed Harry Kane as the ‘greatest ever England number nine’.

However, the former Three Lions captain admitted he is not sure if his ex-teammate is better than him.

Rooney and Kane played alongside each other for England on 10 occasions.

Those appearances included the match which saw Rooney break Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time scoring record.

His penalty against Switzerland in 2015 was his 50th out of 53 for his country, with Kane also on the scoresheet.

The Bayern Munich striker has since smashed Rooney’s benchmark by taking his tally to 74 in 109 caps for the Three Lions.

There is more to his game than scoring goals, though, according to Rooney.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, he was asked about Kane’s habit of dropping deeper in a similar playing style to his own.

Rooney explained: “He’s developed that over the last few years. He’s a clever lad Harry and he knows he’s never been the quickest but I think he’s lost a little bit of sharpness.

“He scored I don’t know how many goals last season for Bayern. He’s a goalscorer, he’s clinical but he’s clever in terms of the positions he’s picking up.

“I watched Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup and it was almost like (Francesco) Totti for Roma, where he’d drop in and there’s runners off of him.

“But gradually as the ball got further forward and they might come back out and went back round the other side, he then makes his way in the box.

“So it’s not a sprint but he’s in there and he’s in and around there and if he gets a chance, he scores. For me, he’s the greatest ever England number nine.”

Ferdinand then asked if Rooney thinks Kane has become a better player than he was during his career.

The 39-year-old added: “As a player, I’m not sure. I think I could do things which potentially he couldn’t. I was nastier than him as well.

“In terms of goalscoring, he creates goals. People say, ‘Oh, he’s scored against San Marino or this team.’ He scores every game.

“Does he play well all the time? No, but for me he’s above everyone.”

Kane needs to be ‘nastier’

Rooney credits his success to his nastiness, admitting Kane’s lack of the same ‘edge’ caused him to stay at Tottenham for as long as he did.

Kane won his first major trophy with Bayern last season after 19 years at SpursGetty

He spent 19 years with his boyhood club before leaving Spurs for Bayern Munich in 2023 as their all-time leading scorer.

The former Manchester United forward said: “It gives you that edge. That’s probably the reason he stayed at Tottenham for so long.

“You want to come out (of) your comfort zone. You want to go and try a different club to try and be successful.

“I’m delighted he’s won the league in Germany but just that little switch (is missing).”

Kane has won back-to-back golden boots since moving to Bayern along with the Bundesliga title last season, his first major trophy.

In contrast, Rooney left Everton for United aged just 18 back in 2004.
