Ben Johnson Breaks Down How Much Caleb Williams Has Grown in Three Weeks ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We’ll dive into the tape and the numbers throughout the week. But first, I found myself trying to see the growth Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has made through the eyes of his head coach, Ben Johnson.

I found these quotes from his press conferences after Sunday’s win and during Monday’s look-back to be worth jotting down:

Ben Johnson on Caleb Williams’ Week 3 performance: “I’m looking at his numbers — 142.6 pass rating and four touchdowns. I thought he was good. And the thing that you don’t see on the stat sheet is he’s getting a lot more comfortable calling those plays in the huddle. We were able to get out of the huddle a little bit faster, and we were able to get on the line and operate a little bit cleaner as well. I was proud of him for that.”

On the offensive line’s role in QB1’s success: “When the offensive line protects like that, it’s a lot easier to play from the pocket. We had a very clean pocket for the most part. That’s a starting point. He’s got the ability to escape and extend and all that, but man, if we can keep him in there, our playmakers are some dynamic route runners that we can get the ball to them in space. … There’s a lot of ways that Caleb Williams can hurt you, and when we have pass protection like we had yesterday, that certainly helps.” Sep 21, 2025; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) throws a touchdown pass against the Dallas Cowboys during the first half at Soldier Field. I thought we weren’t as pressed on the shot clock as maybe what we’d been the first two games. We still have some room for improvement just in terms of our alignments and all being on the same page. I think there are a few plays we want back just as an entire unit that we didn’t get off as clean as we wanted to from a procedure standpoint. But I do see growth there.”

Ben Johnson says the mechanical stuff is getting better, too: “In terms of the execution, he’s getting a lot better. A lot more comfortable with his footwork, his repetitions. Not just for the concepts that we’ve been doing from the springtime to training camp, but we’re putting in new ones each week. He’s got a good system in place right now that he’s adhering to, and it’s showing up on gameday where we’re starting to reap some of the awards from that.”

There is so much good stuff to take away from what Ben Johnson had to say about Caleb Williams and his Week 3 performance against the Dallas Cowboys. We are just three games into the regular season, but I cannot stop thinking about how much I appreciate the clarity with which Johnson speaks about the quarterback, his progress, and what goes into making the offense work. Bears coaches aren’t often like this, and when they are, it is too short-lived.

I’ll be blunt: I’m straight-up vibing with what Ben is saying about Caleb because he makes it digestible and easy to understand, which makes it easy for me to share here. All of this is going to make us smarter football fans. And if QB1 keeps playing at a high level, we’ll be smarter and entertained. What a combo!

Ben Johnson on Caleb Williams, development, and growth

My favorite Ben Johnson quote is one that comes with some self-reflection as the head coach discusses what it is like to coach Caleb Williams:

“It’s fun. I don’t have to be perfect as a play-caller. I’ve always tried to be that where you get the primary receiver open the majority of the time, and I don’t feel that necessity anymore. If No. 1’s open, he’ll take it. We’re getting to where he’s progressing to 2 and 3, but if we need to escape or extend, it’s his natural playmaking and that’s the balance we want to strike.”

Ahhh, the never-ending battle for perfection. I feel ya, coach.

Ben Johnson admitting that he feels less pressure to be perfect because he knows that his quarterback can make chicken salad out of chicken scratch is one of those things that reminds you that the coach who talked about building an offense around his signal-caller’s strengths is actually doing that in real time. That Johnson isn’t being overbearing on Williams and is embracing his ability to create on the fly is right there for you in the quote above. Other coaches run from that stuff and try to fit quarterbacks in boxes. But Ben Johnson isn’t like other coaches.

The thing that stands out about Caleb Williams’ development through three weeks is that he continues to get better with each game. These are his stat lines from each game this season:

WEEK 1 — 21/35 (60%), 210 yards (6.0 Y/A), 1 TD, 0 INT, 86.6 rating; 6 carries, 58 yards, 1 rush TD vs. Vikings WEEK 2 — 19/30 (63.3%), 207 yards (6.9 Y/A), 2 TD, 1 INT, 91.9 rating; 5 carries, 27 yards WEEK 3 — 19/28 (67.9%), 298 yards (10.6 Y/A), 4 TD, 0 INT, 142.6 rating; 5 carries, 12 yards

Two things I love seeing the most are the increase in yards per attempt each week and the uptick in completion percentage. Don’t get me wrong. I love that Caleb Williams nearly eclipsed the 300-yard barrier. The big number is a beautiful thing to see. But Williams becoming more efficient with his passes while also getting splash plays is truly a sight for sore eyes for those who have been watching sub-par Bears quarterbacking for as long as I can remember.

With that being said, Caleb Williams still has stuff to work on as his development continues. That Ben Johnson isn’t shy about saying that publicly is one of my favorite things about the Bears’ first-year head coach. Johnson has shown an ability to balance sharing positives and negatives about his players. It reminds me of some teachers I had growing up who were hard on me because they knew I could do better, but were also quick to point out that I was doing good things.
