For the third consecutive day, firefighting and civil defense teams are battling raging forest fires in Jabal Turkmen forests, Latakia countryside northeastern Syria.
Civil defense officials said that firefighting teams are facing significant challenges due to high wind speeds, unpredictable gusts, rugged terrain.
In a statement shared with SANA, Abdul Kafi Kayal, Director of the Disaster and Emergency Directorate in Latakia Governorate said that ‘’containment remains moderate. Teams have successfully extinguished several hotspots, but are still battling in areas such as Bajoura al-Maa and the route connecting Al-Sukariya to Al-Rihaniya” due to mountainous terrain and hazardous remnants.
Kayal confirmed some injuries among firefighters and a loss of a fire truck in battling the flames but stressed that “reinforcements have been dispatched” from Aleppo and Idleb, with additional support from Rural Damascus and heavy machinery deployed to carve out firebreaks to prevent further spread.
