DENVER (KDVR) — A FedEx delivery truck on its way to Wyoming is stuck on an Interstate 25 ramp in Thornton Monday morning after one of its deliveries started leaking hydrochloric acid, police said.

The I-25 ramps at 84th Avenue are closed, as is 84th Avenue itself, while responders work to neutralize and clean up the acid, Thornton Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Ernie Anderson told FOX31's Kasia Kerridge.

Anderson said the FedEx driver noticed the leak at around 2 a.m. Monday as he was on the way from the warehouse to Wyoming.

"The spill at this point seems to be relatively small," Anderson said. "We don't have any product running down the road surface or anything, this seems to be contained in the trailer."

Anderson said a hazmat team was working on making entry to figure out what the exact problem is, but he expected the process to take several hours.

"They will make entry using hazmat suits; they'll make entry into the truck, put their eyes on it, identify what the problem is and then relay that information back to the hazmat command side of it to come up with a plan on how to deal with this," Anderson said. "It will be a process of neutralizing the acid so it becomes more of a non-reactive PH."
