Week 3 Storylines, Homecomings, Players to Watch, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

I survived my first concert ever at the Metro. Alkaline Trio was something else. But now that we have arrived at Sunday, it is time to talk Chicago Bears football.

This quote from Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer (via CBS Sports) has stuck with me for the past few days: “I think the best thing in the world would be for us to play well, win this game, and give Matt Eberflus the game ball after we play well and beat Chicago.” I don’t think you can have a “must-win” game in Week 3. But it feels like this is one of those “gotta have it” games for the Bears. You just can’t afford to lose to your old head coach, who you ran out of town (rightfully so!), at your home stadium, where winning games for him was a challenge. And while I don’t think a loss is the end of the world, I just don’t want to see this team lose to that coach. The last thing Ben Johnson needs as the Bears’ head coach is to lose to Matt Eberflus. The Week 3 matchup between the Bears and Cowboys also features a homecoming for linebacker Jack Sanborn. After playing 48 games in three years with Chicago, the Bears didn’t tender Sanborn a contract. This led him to follow Eberflus to Dallas. Sanborn, a native of suburban Lake Zurich, has 14 tackles (6 solo) and 1 tackle-for-loss while starting both games at the middle linebacker spot for Dallas. Sean Hammond (Tribune) nails it in writing that both defenses will be under the microscope on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how Dennis Allen and Matt Eberflus go about stopping these opposing offenses. My gut feeling has me believing that this game will be decided by who has the ball last. Over at The Athletic, Dan Wiederer writes that the Caleb Williams-Matt Eberflus angle makes for an awkward reunion, but a compelling chess match. Well framed. I couldn’t have put it any better myself. © Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports Let’s keep an eye on Brandon Aubrey today. The Cowboys kicker is a two-time Pro Bowler who was a first-team All-Pro in 2023 and a second-teamer in 2024. He is coming off beating the New York Giants with a field goal in Week 2. I feel like it is worth pointing out that much of Aubrey’s success has come at home, where he has nailed 49 of 50 field goals (98 percent) in his career. Meanwhile, his road numbers (33/41, 80.5 percent) and his stats in outdoor games (26/34, 76.5 percent) leave something to be desired. Let’s see if he can do it in the elements. If Bears kicker Cairo Santos slips up, practice squad leg Jake Moody is waiting in the wings. Sure, it doesn’t sound like Chicago is in a rush to boot Santos out the door. However, signing a kicker to the practice squad puts the veteran on notice. Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) discusses the move to Chicago with Moody, and points out that the former San Francisco 49ers kicker was working through a sprained ankle last season. Moody’s recent track record doesn’t give me too much hope, but I suppose it is worth a roll of the dice on a college All-American kicker. Olamide Zaccheaus is a player to watch today, according to Marquee’s Nicholas Moreano. With the Cowboys defense having just coughed up an 8-catch, 142-yard, 1-touchdown game to New York Giants slot receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, this feels like a good time to get Zaccheaus a ton of action in the passing game. Heck, this could be a game where a Bears tight end like Cole Kmet or rookie Colston Loveland (why not both!?) makes some splash plays if the Cowboys are soft in the middle. Given what we wrote above, Olamide Zaccheaus player profile seems well-timed: How about this for a Week 3 fun fact:

Five teams — Bengals, Vikings, Commanders, Jets and 49ers — will start backup QBs. Now, there is even more importance on the backup to the backup, who now will serve as the No. 2 QBs today. pic.twitter.com/6NeX8WJc3E
