‘Have to learn’ – Jaguars star breaks silence on Trevor Lawrence-Liam Coen clash as $275m QB’s next steps laid out ...Middle East

The tension was clear to see on the Jacksonville Jaguars sideline as Sunday’s tight contest against the Cincinnati Bengals unfolded.

Frustrations spilled over, if only for a brief moment, in the fourth quarter.

TV cameras caught rookie head coach Liam Coen motioning toward Trevor Lawrence, directing him to throw a sharper ball as the Jaguars pushed for the win.

His $275 million franchise quarterback, one of the NFL’s highest-paid stars, responded by waving the criticism off.

In doing so, he provided a viral clip that was replayed millions of times on social media.

But for Jacksonville linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, that was the exact kind of exchange he wanted to see in the heat of battle.

Jags star ‘excited’ by sideline spat between Lawrence and Coen

“It’s a healthy relationship,” the veteran exclusively told talkSPORT, breaking down the viral moment between Lawrence and Coen.

“You know, a coach is supposed to push his player and get the best out of him.

“It would be weird if a player does what he wants, especially a developing player.

“Trevor wants to get better. We all want to see Trevor get better, and the coach is trying to get better.”

In what was just his second game as a head coach in the NFL, Coen displayed the kind of passion that no doubt helped him land the Jacksonville job in the first place — and Oluokun believes his exchange with Lawrence will be beneficial for both moving forward.

The linebacker continued: “It’s his first time being a head coach, so obviously there’s ways in his methods — he’s going to have to learn his players.

“But it’s encouraging that they both want to get better and lead us to win.

“I love the fact that they kind of — I won’t even say butt heads — they just want win.

“They’re learning each other, and Trevor’s playing better. That’s why I’m happy seeing it.

“I think they have a great, healthy relationship. That’s the growth mindset between the both of them. So I’m excited for it.”

How can $275m Lawrence take crucial next steps in NFL?

If the Jaguars are to find success this season, Lawrence would be smart to feed off the passion his coach displays on the sideline.

After a 26-10 win in their 2025 season opener against the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville suffered a tough, last-second loss against the Bengals — who were led for the most part by backup Jake Browning.

As the relationship between Lawrence and Coen grows, and they begin to work each other out, Jacksonville will expect to close these types of games out.

In time, perhaps, if the coach offers some constructive criticism from the sideline, his star player will not wave it off.

For a franchise that hasn’t finished with a winning record since 2022, and for a quarterback who has a 23-39 record starting under center with the Jaguars, there is plenty of room for improvement.

And in the nine months since Coen arrived in Jacksonville, Oluokun has already seen growth in Lawrence’s game — and his confidence.

“It seems like everybody’s on the same page,” he said of the Lawrence-led offensive unit.

“He knows where to go with the ball a little bit better. Making good throws and stuff.

“His confidence is skyrocketing, we saw it growing all the way through OTAs and stuff.

“Now he’s making tight window throws, and throwing the ball in places where I feel like he might have double hissed it a little bit last year.

“So I’m just excited to see him keep growing as a player and as a person — and as a leader as well — and see where our team goes with it.”

Confidence, indeed, will be key if Lawrence is it hit new heights as Jacksonville’s franchise quarterback.

As is the need to improve on a passer rating (80.6) which ranked him 28th in the league — ahead of only Michael Penix Jr. and Jalen Hurts — last weekend.

With an exciting rookie head coach, this year’s No.2 draft pick Travis Hunter alongside him — and a defense that is already putting up impressive turnover numbers — there is real hope that Lawrence can do just that, and lead the Jaguars to the playoffs in 2025.

Following a tension-laden Week 2 loss at Cincinnati, Jacksonville will be looking to bounce back Sunday against the injury-ravaged San Francisco 49ers.
