Sunny Hills football wins again as offense leads the way past Sonora ...Middle East

LA HABRA — Sunny Hills set a goal of scoring on every possession. The Lancers nearly did it.

The Lancers scored on five of their six possessions, with George Shelledy setting the pace, in a 34-20 victory over Sonora in a nonleague game Friday.

Shelledy rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Mikael Khan threw for one touchdown and ran for another for the Lancers (4-1).

“We definitely should have scored on every single possession in this game,” Shelledy said. “We just made a little bit of mistakes on offense that we need to clean up before our next game.”

Sunny Hills started the game by going 70 yards in seven plays. Completions of 18 and 2 yards to Kruz Sandle and a 17-yard run by Shelledy set up the score. Khan got away from pressure and found Sandle in the corner of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown barely four minutes into the game.

A blocked punt set up the Lancers at the Sonora 41. They burned nearly six minutes off the clock before Shelledy scored on a 2-yard run with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.

Sunny Hills held the ball for 15 minutes in the first half. Its only non-scoring possession of the game was a missed 43-yard field goal attempt.

“We’ve been executing well and doing our jobs,” Shelledy said.

The Raiders, who had two first downs in the first half, finally got on the board when they took the second-half kickoff and drove 70 yards. Sonora eschewed the run, which had yielded little to that point.

Levi Santos completed six straight passes on the drive. A 26-yard completion to Matthew Shaw got them across midfield for just the second time, and Santos eventually went back to Shaw for a 7-yard score, cutting the lead to 21-7.

Shelledy put the game out of reach with scoring runs of 5 and 2 yards on the Lancers’ next two possessions.

“We were just expecting to drive down methodically and just run them all night, because we were more physical than they were,” Shelledy said.
