Cairo Santos’ Job is Safe (For Now) ...Middle East

Cairo Santos’ job status is safe for the time being.

The Chicago Bears turned some heads when they signed kicker Jake Moody to their practice squad. But one week later, I had to jog my memory to even remember that transaction because so much bad happened in the Bears’ 30+ point loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 2 that kicker concerns took a backseat.

Bears Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower met with the media on Thursday. It represented the first time he had spoken publicly since the team added Moody to the roster to provide some competition in the kicking department. However, after listening to Hightower speak, I came away feeling that the team was still committed to Cairo Santos as its top kicker.

On his impressions of Jake Moody in college: “Good player. With talent. Good player with talent.” When asked a follow-up to the initial Jake Moody question: “I think our personnel department does a really good job of combing the whole entire league. And that’s what they do. He’s a young, developmental player that’s on our practice squad. He’s just a young, developmental player who’s on our practice squad that’s what he brings right now. Nothing more.” And, finally, when asked why Moody was brought in: “Because our personnel department does a great job of combing the whole entire league. And anybody who thinks they have a chance to play for us at some point, whether it’s a wide receiver, a DB, a running back, there are so many different people on the practice squad. So we’re going to try to develop them all, try to help them all get better.”

Based on the special teams coordinator’s words, it doesn’t sound like the Chicago Bears are pushing hard to get Jake Moody in or nudge Cairo Santos out.

Even After Signing Jake Moody, the Bears Still Seem Committed to Cairo Santos

OK, Richard Hightower’s media availability earlier in the week didn’t necessarily come with a ringing endorsement of Bears kicker Cairo Santos. But it also didn’t come with a feeling that Chicago’s special teams coordinator was ready to thrust Jake Moody into the limelight and push Santos out of his role. This isn’t to say that it can’t happen. The Bears obviously brought in Moody as a contingency plan at the kicker position. However, it seems like the team is in no rush to make a change at the position.

Cairo Santos had a quiet Week 2. In the team’s loss to the Lions, Santos made all three of his extra point tries and did not attempt a field goal. He also booted the opening kickoff out of bounds, in what I thought was an inauspicious start before ultimately turning into a sign of things to come.

DO THE BEARS HAVE A CAIRO SANTOS PROBLEM?

Even with Santos’ early struggles, the Bears kicker has made 89.3 percent of his field goals and 93.8 percent of his PATs since returning to the team in 2020. But since posting back-to-back seasons with 91 percent success rates on field goals in 2022 and 2023, Santos has made just 81.5 percent of his kicks in 19 games since the start of the 2024 campaign.

The early-season issues that popped up for Cairo Santos in Week 1, combined with his shortcomings last year, nudged the team to add Jake Moody to the practice squad last Friday. Perhaps the Bears will work on some mechanical things that might have gotten out of whack with Moody. I imagine the team is holding out hope that a change of scenery will get the former University of Michigan All-American back on track. If not, the Bears could still browse the market for a potential Santos replacement. So while he isn’t out of the woods, his job seems safe (for now).
