YORBA LINDA — Marina football coach Charlie TeGantvoort collected a milestone victory, his 100th as a head coach, as the Vikings defeated Esperanza 21-7 on Thursday night at Yorba Linda High.
TeGantvoort reflected on the significance of the moment.
“You know, to me, it means I’ve been blessed with a lot of great coaches, assistant coaches,” TeGantvoort said. “Like I said, their DC Nick Heinle was my first ever (defensive coordinator). Na (Tukia) was with me my second year (overall) until now, my first year at Santa Ana, you know. So I’ve had some really good assistants, really good coaches and it, you know, it’s just a blessing to be able to coach this long with such great people to help us win.”
Francis Saporito threw a pair of touchdown passes, both to Carson Hunnicutt as the Vikings improved to 4-1 as they head into their bye week before starting Lambda League play where they face Sunny Hills.
Saporito, who played running back last season, also ran for 95 yards, while Hunnicutt caught seven passes for 119 yards and 2 TDs.
“You know, they’ve spent a lot of time in the offseason because they’re both new to starting, but they saw, obviously, that last year we had some great players with Garrett Hunnicutt and Shane Cassidy and they wanted to be the next two up and followed those two footsteps and they’re doing a great job.” TeGantvoort said of Saporito and Hunnicutt.
Saporito also weighed in on his coach’s milestone win.
“First of all, I just want to say that I am so lucky and so honored to be Coach T’s one hundredth win. I love that man so much, and I’m just so honored.” Saporito said. “I’ve been through this program for three years now, and I’ve seen Coach T from the very beginning and now to my senior year, I love being able to be part of his 100th win and having that memory.”
The Vikings scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, a 6-yard run by Ben Ramos and a 30-yard reception by Hunnicutt.
Marina took advantage of a couple of penalties to move upfield, a horse collar tackle and a pass interference call where Saporito and Ramos took turns running the ball to move into scoring territory.
Esperanza (1-3) missed a golden opportunity to tie the game after stopping Marina on fourth down at the Vikings 29-yard line.
The Aztecs only gained six yards on the drive as Travis Frazier narrowly missed connecting with Eddie Matthews on fourth down.
The Vikings took over at their own 23 and used a 37-yard strike from Saporito to Hunnicutt to flip the field position.
A few plays later, Hunnicutt scored to give Marina a 14-0 lead with 20 seconds left in the half.
The Vikings made it 21-0 before Brody Snyder took a short pass from Frazier and scored on a 17-yard play to make it 21-7.
An interception by Mason Moore in the fourth quarter helped the Aztecs get in position to trim their deficit and make it a one-score game.
But the Marina defense kept Esperanza off the scoreboard by forcing a turnover on downs.
