Building a vinyl collection is one thing. Figuring out how to play those records properly is another. Between choosing the right turntable, finding compatible speakers and navigating a sea of audio terminology, getting into vinyl can feel unnecessarily complicated. And while all-in-one record players offer an easy entry point, their sound quality often leaves something to be desired.

Victrola is looking to bridge that gap with its Wave turntable and Soundstage speaker, a pairing that promises a more substantial listening experience without the elaborate setup. We put both to the test to see how they work together, and while there are a few trade-offs, there’s plenty to like.

Pros: Sleek design, easy setup, Bluetooth connectivity and built-in preamp.Cons: Bulky when stacked and limited sound controls.

Design and Features

The Wave is a manual belt-drive turntable equipped with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95E cartridge, Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity and support for 33 1/3 and 45 RPM records. It also features Auracast technology, which allows audio to be shared with compatible wireless speakers, plus a built-in switchable phono preamp.

The Soundstage takes a different approach to speaker placement. Designed to sit directly beneath the turntable, it features a front-facing speaker grille, a down-firing woofer that helps minimize vibrations and multiple connection options, including Bluetooth, RCA, optical and USB-C. There’s also an included remote for adjusting volume and switching inputs.

Aesthetically, the pairing is hard to fault. The stacked configuration looks fantastic, although its space-saving design comes with a catch. While it eliminates the horizontal bulk of traditional bookshelf speakers, the combined height is difficult to ignore, especially compared with more compact starter systems.

Pros: Sleek design, easy setup and solid sound.Cons: Limited sound controls and lacks audio depth.

Putting the Soundstage to the Test

Getting everything connected was surprisingly straightforward, with the Wave’s built-in preamp allowing it to work directly with the Soundstage through RCA cables. No complicated wiring or additional audio equipment required.

As for the sound? Pretty good, actually. The Soundstage has enough power to fill a room with music, although it doesn’t quite have the depth or stereo separation you’d get from a dedicated pair of bookshelf speakers. It’s a noticeable difference, particularly if you’re used to a more traditional stereo setup.

One thing we kept wishing for was more control over the audio. The included remote handles the basics, but a few additional settings to fine-tune the bass, treble and overall crispness would have made a difference, especially when switching between different records.

Still, for a speaker designed to make vinyl listening less complicated, there’s a lot to appreciate.

The Verdict

Victrola’s Wave and Soundstage feel less like a beginner’s setup and more like a natural next step for someone ready to take vinyl listening a little more seriously.

It’s not a replacement for a full hi-fi system, particularly for listeners who prioritize detailed sound customization. But it’s attractive, intuitive and capable of doing exactly what it sets out to do: take the confusion out of building a vinyl setup and put the focus back on the music.
