Bears DC Dennis Allen Shares a Shemar Turner Update ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Finally, some clarity regarding the status of Chicago Bears rookie defensive tackle Shemar Turner.

Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen discussed what’s been holding back the rookie second-round pick from Texas A&M during his Thursday press confernce at Halas Hall:

“I think he’s had a couple of good weeks of practice. He missed a lot of time in the offseason and training camp. I think he’s starting to turn the corner a little bit. We’ve been impressed with some of the things we’ve seen. And so, it’s really about doing it in practice, and then when he gets his opportunity, taking advantage of it when we get to game day.”

So if you’ve been wondering where Shemar Turner has been the last two weeks, there is your answer.

The Bears used the last of their second-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft to take Turner, a defensive lineman from Texas A&M who has a tweener profile but a relentless motor. It is the type of profile that you’d want from a developing defensive lineman who could be deployed in creative ways by a veteran defensive coordinator who values versatility and energy in the trenches. Unfortunately, Turner has been on the outside looking in at Bears games all summer after suffering an injury during training camp that kept him off the field in the preseason and on the sidelines throughout training camp.

When it comes to Shemar Turner making his Bears regular-season debut, I am in “I’ll believe it when I see it” mode. But Dennis Allen saying that Turner is “starting to turn the corner” is something that suggests that his arrival on the defensive line could be on the horizon.

It will be a welcome sight whenever Turner makes it into the rotation. Chicago’s football team has just three sacks in two games. Only three teams (the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans have two sacks, the Carolina Panthers have just one) have fewer sacks than the Bears. This unit is also allowing opposing quarterbacks to post a 136.9 passer rating. In other words, you wouldn’t be hard-pressed to make a case that no team has defended the pass worse than Dennis Allen’s defense. So any help the Bears can get in the trenches (and elsewhere) would be welcome.

Dennis Allen Speaks — September 18, 2025

In addition to providing an update regarding rookie defensive tackle Shemar Turner, Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen had some other things on his mind. Let’s sort through some highlights:

What’s on deck: “If you’re in this league long enough, you’ve been in one of those types of games. So you make the corrections that you need to make, and you come back in and you go to work. That’s what you do. You get right back up on the horse, and let’s go ride again. And that’s what our guys are doing. … This is a prideful group. They’ll respond.”

Dennis Allen on trying ot move on from losing in Week 2: “Look, I know everybody wants to rehash what happened last week, and really, we’ve moved on. I’ll just say this. When you don’t perform well, and you lose a game like that, there’s a lot of issues that went on, and so there’s a lot of dirty hands. We all accept responsibility, coaches and players alike, and we’re focused on trying to make the corrections and get ready for Dallas.” May 9, 2025; Lake Forest, IL, USA; Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen (L), general manager Ryan Poles (C) and head coach Ben Johnson (R) observe during the Rookie Minicamp at Halas Hall. When you have significant players that are missing time, it’s challenging. And yet, that’s why we do what we do. That’s why we’re at the highest level of this profession, you know, is to figure out solutions and figure out ways to get the job done. Ninety percent of the world doesn’t give a care about your problems, the other 10 percent are glad you got ’em.” What’s next for Montez Sweat? “We’ve got to do some things to try to create some more one-on-one situations. … I think it’s just really about trying to create some more opportunities for him, and then just being consistent in terms of his technique and his fundamentals, and his pass rush.” On Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott: “I think he’s an outstanding player. I think he’s playing at a really high level. He’s certainly got total command of their offense. And so, we’re going ot have to try to do some things to get him uncomfortable in the pocket. Hopefully, we’ll have some looks that have him hold the ball a couple of extra counts and try to affect him that way.
