I would open this by saying “the day after the Cubs clinch is always X, Y, and Z,” but the fact is, the Cubs haven’t clinched quite like they did yesterday in eight years. The 2020 season never quite felt real, and the 2018 season finished with a thud, the Cubs losing to the Brewers in Game 163. Yesterday was the first time in a very long time that we could just celebrate the Cubs MAKING THE PLAYOFFS WOOOOOO. So I’m out of practice doing the day-after-lineup thing, so to speak.
Let’s see how the rest of this goes …
Speaking of the day-after thing, I’m not sure how the Cubs will proceed. On the one hand, they’ve clinched a playoff spot, and you want to find opportunities to get guys rest anyway. On the other hand, there is still that top Wild Card spot to lock down (magic number is six), and still an outside shot at the NL Central (the Brewers’ magic number is also six). We’ll see if it’s a restful lineup. Ian Happ, the longest-tenured Cub, got a little emotional talking about this moment, and that made me a little emotional, too:"It's special … It's gonna be great to be back in the postseason."Ian Happ is emotional after the Cubs clinched a playoff berth. pic.twitter.com/v0bwV3D8yF
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 17, 2025 “You’re happy for everybody involved,” Craig Counsell said of the Cubs clinching, per Cubs.com. “That’s the biggest part, is that there’s a lot of people involved in this. … You want the fans to be able to experience October baseball and be a part of that and take them on a journey with the team. That’s so much fun. Those are the people you think about when this stuff happens — everybody that puts in the work, everybody that shows up at 12 o’clock for a night game and all the fans that come every day to Wrigley. We want them to be able to enjoy the best of baseball, which is October.” It’s really impressive how much of this big league team has been developed through the Cubs’ system (either the entire way, or the vast majority of the way):This is just the players in this photo. — Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) September 17, 2025 Today is a happy day, so I don’t want to dwell too much on another mixed outing for Matthew Boyd, but let’s just say I’m really hoping the Cubs can give him an extra day or two before the Wild Card series. © Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Oktoberfest is coming to Wrigley Field, so it looks like the rookies (and some sophomores) got to travel in style:Rookies are Oktoberfest ready, @ofcwrigleyfield. pic.twitter.com/7OXkUCoZMF
— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) September 17, 2025 Random but unsurprising factoid on Ian Happ:Ian Happ – a Pittsburgh native – has the longest on-base streak (37 games) in PNC Park history. That's Pretty Neat & Cool
— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) September 17, 2025 Two more hits for Nico Hoerner in the game, and his batting average is up to .303. Trea Turner is at .305. This is fun. Justin Turner is now hitting .283/.333/.446/117 wRC+ against lefties this season, and is above-average overall going all the way back to his walk-off winner against the Marlins in mid-May. He became exactly what the Cubs hoped he would be. Billy Hamilton is hoping for a chance to be the Cubs’ postseason-pinch-runner-guy, so he’s working hard to get up to speed:The Cubs were looking for some speed to bring off the bench this postseason. They may turn to 35-year-old Billy Hamilton who has been in Mexico waiting for another shot. t.co/HVRGwZGS08
— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) September 17, 2025The Cubs brought Billy Hamilton in to be a potential pinch run option on the postseason squad. Safe to say the legs are still there. They've been pinch running him in Triple-A games to get the legs going again. 3 for 3 so far. Here's two of them on two straight pitches. pic.twitter.com/MkfDaK6CMk
