Red Bull is poised to reintroduce a revised version of its “Macarena” rear wing at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix after identifying and resolving the mechanical issues that forced the team to shelve the design following two alarming failures.
The Milton Keynes-based squad reverted to a previous-spec rear wing for last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix while engineers investigated the successive failures that hit Max Verstappen in Austria and at Silverstone.
With the underlying issues that caused the crashes now understood and addressed, the updated design is expected to make its return at the Hungaroring.
Red Bull confident reliability concerns have been solved
Team principal Laurent Mekies revealed after last weekend's race at Spa-Francorchamps that engineers had traced the failures to two distinct mechanical issues and were confident the revised package would be ready for Budapest.
"It was mechanical, and it was two different things," Mekies explained of Red Bull’s problematic rear wing after Sunday’s race at Spa-Francorchamps.
"So two different mechanical issues. We will have a fix for Budapest.”
Technical director Pierre Wache had already shed light on the investigation during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, explaining that the problem lay in the wing's mechanical design rather than its aerodynamic concept.
“It's a mechanical problem that we spotted after the accident in Silverstone,” Wache said.
“We fix it. We are trying to prove that we are bulletproof before we put on the car, and it should be ready for Budapest.”
Red Bull alleviates FIA’s concerns
Wache also stressed that the FIA had no concerns over the legality or integrity of the design, with Red Bull's cautious approach driven entirely by its own standards.
“We’ve proved it to them, what we've done,” the Frenchman added. “I think it's on our side that we make it cautious now. We don't want to take any risk, and we want to be 100% sure.”
The rotating rear wing concept was first introduced by Ferrari before Red Bull developed its own interpretation.
But after a second consecutive failure at Silverstone, Verstappen branded the device "super dangerous", prompting the team to revert to a more conventional rear wing specification for Spa.
That decision coincided with an encouraging weekend for the reigning world champion, who returned to the podium with a third-place finish and admitted the older wing delivered a more reassuring feel.
“You mean the old rear wing? It performed well. I kept it on the road, which I think is the first thing,” he quipped.

Verstappen also felt the RB22's balance had improved, although tyre performance remained a limiting factor.
“We were just a little bit more competitive, and the balance was a little bit better. But we struggled more on the hard tyre, as simple as that,” he explained.
Whether the revised rotating rear wing can offer a further step forward at the Hungaroring remains to be seen. Verstappen is reluctant to predict where Red Bull will slot into the competitive order on a circuit that places a premium on cornering performance.
“Of course it’s nice to be less starved in Hungary, but I don’t know whether that’s good or bad because, at the end of the day, there are a lot of corners and you need good cornering performance from the car, which makes it impossible to know how good we are going to be,” the Dutchman concluded.
