In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Interior said: “In the course of investigating a report filed on September 13 by the Deputy Director of the Egyptian Museum and a conservation specialist, who discovered the disappearance of a rare golden bracelet (from the Late Period) from a metal safe in the conservation laboratory, investigations revealed that the perpetrator was a conservation specialist at the Egyptian Museum.”

“She managed to steal the bracelet on the 9th of this month while on duty at the museum by taking advantage of a moment of inattention. She then contacted a merchant she knew (the owner of a silver shop in Sayyida Zeinab, Cairo), who sold it to a gold workshop owner in the gold market for LE180,000. The workshop owner then sold the bracelet to a gold smelter for LE194,000, who melted it down with other gold jewelry to reshape it.”

The statement concluded: “Following the legal procedures, the individuals mentioned were arrested. When confronted, they confessed to the crime. The money from the sale of the bracelet was seized from them, and legal action has been taken.”
