A shocking moment caught on camera at a Metra train station in suburban Hinsdale led police to issue a safety message to the community, reminding the public that “catching a train is not worth risking your life.”
The video, shared by the Hinsdale Police Department on Facebook as part of “Think Train Week,” shows a person running on the train platform at the Garfield Crossing in front of a train stopped on the tracks.
The person then appears to slide, or crawl, under the train, presumably to get to the other side of the platform.
“Our assumption was that this person was running late for the train and couldn’t get on the right side of the tracks, and made the decision to go underneath it,” Deputy Chief Tom Lillie said in an interview with NBC Chicago.
“If that person can’t make that train, our suggestion would be just wait for the next one. By sliding under the train like that, you risk serious injury or death,” Lillie added.
Metra engineers will not allow passengers who cross tracks illegally onto to trains. Doing so could also result in fines, Metra says in its Passenger Code of Conduct.
In their Facebook post, Hinsdale police warned passengers to cross only at designated locations, obey all signs and signals, and to look both ways before crossing.
“Despite all safety features being activated, an individual in this recent video at the Garfield Crossing made the dangerous choice to board a train, risking her life,” the post said. “This is why we have safety campaigns. Catching a train is not worth risking your life.”
According to officials, the person in the video has not been identified.
