Matthew Silverstone, one of the two students shot at Evergreen High School last week, is still fighting for his life, his uncle said Wednesday.
“Every day, we have glimmers of hope, we take every little baby step in the right direction and celebrate it,” Kris Koehler said in a recorded video shared by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “But to see him, to see him there, it is great when he will squeeze a hand. But at the same time, it is so painful to see that anyone, especially a kid, would have to endure that.”

— Jeffco Sheriff (@jeffcosheriffco) September 17, 2025Silverstone had just turned 18 the day before the nine-minute attack on Sept. 10, when another student fired 20 rounds inside and outside the school, critically wounding Silverstone and another classmate before fatally shooting himself.
The other student, whose identity has not been released, was in serious condition at Children’s Hospital.
Silverstone’s mom has not left his bedside at St. Anthony Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
“It’s going to be a long road,” Koehler said. “We are coming to grips with what could be a lifelong recovery.”
Koehler described his nephew as a “normal kid,” who enjoys spending most days at the skate park until he’s told to go home, and hanging out with his friends “doing normal teenage stuff.”
“He’s just a wonderful kid,” Koehler said. “He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He would go out of his way to help anybody.”
Koehler said their family has received a lot of cards, including from classmates thanking Silverstone for warning other kids away from the shooter during the attack.
“You’re truly a hero and such a kind person. So please get better soon!” Koehler said, reading one of the cards.
Silverstone’s mother adopted him out of foster care when he was about 6 months old, taking him out of an abusive situation, Koehler said.
“It was just heart wrenching to see this little baby, but he grew with the love and tenderness from my sister, from Yaya, my mom, when she was still alive, from his sisters. And he grew into this just wonderful, kind, gentle human being.”
“To know that history, to know that was the start he had, makes all of this just a bit even more unfair,” Koehler said. “No one deserves this, no one, but given that history, especially Matthew.”
The family is asking for support through GoFundMe.
“No family should have to ask for help in a scenario like this. But unfortunately, it’s our new reality. Matthew is still fighting. My sister is going to do everything she can to help him in that fight,” Koehler said.
“As a single mother of three, she is the rock in that family. It is now our turn to get as much support for her as we possibly can.”
