Paul McCartney’s 1970 song “Maybe I’m Amazed” was born during one of the biggest changes of his life: the end of The Beatles and the beginning of his solo career.
More than five decades later, the song remains one of his best-known love songs and has earned major recognition, including a spot on Billboard’s list of the 50 Best Rock Love Songs.
In Billboard’s ranking, “Maybe I’m Amazed” came in at No. 13. The publication described it as McCartney’s purest love song from his early solo years, pointing to its piano runs, guitar parts, and powerful vocals.
The song also received top recognition from Rolling Stone, which placed “Maybe I’m Amazed” at No. 1 on its list of the 100 Best Beatles Solo Songs.

Released on McCartney’s self-titled debut solo album, McCartney, the song became closely linked to his relationship with his wife, Linda McCartney. It also captured a period when McCartney was moving forward after the breakup of the band that had made him world-famous.
The Beatles had been dealing with growing problems before their split became public. During the making of the White Album, Ringo Starr temporarily left the group. George Harrison also briefly quit during the “Get Back” rehearsals. Later, disagreements over business matters added more tension.
After recording Abbey Road, John Lennon told the other members that he was leaving the group. On April 9, 1970, McCartney released a press statement connected to his first solo album and said he was no longer working with the band.
McCartney then turned his attention to his life outside the group and to his new solo career.
“Maybe I’m Amazed” was deeply connected to Linda, who helped him through the difficult period. In his 2023 book The Lyrics – 1956 to the Present, McCartney explained the feeling behind the song, per American Songwriter.
“In much the way that Linda wanted to flee from New York society—the constrictions of Park Avenue and Scarsdale—I wanted to flee from what The Beatles had become. I was hoping to escape. She was hoping to escape. So we had this feeling that we had each pulled the other ‘out of time.’”
The song’s lyrics show a man who is both in love and unsure of what comes next. One of its best-known lines is “Maybe I’m a lonely man who’s in the middle of something/That he doesn’t really understand.”
McCartney recorded “Maybe I’m Amazed” at EMI Studios at Abbey Road in February 1970. This time, however, he was not recording with John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
McCartney played piano, bass, drums, organ and multiple guitars on the recording. Linda also contributed vocals. The song became the second-to-last track on McCartney.
Although the original recording was not released as a single, it received radio airplay around the world. McCartney admitted that the song probably should have been chosen as a single.
“Sometimes we’re a bit daft here. We have a bit of a funky organisation, you know, which isn’t that clued into picking tracks off albums. At the time we thought ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ was a good track and maybe we should do that as a single, which it probably should have been. But we never did,” He told BBC presenter Paul Gambaccini.
A promotional film was also made using still photographs taken by Linda. The film debuted in the United Kingdom on April 19, 1970, and was later shown in the United States on The Ed Sullivan Show.
McCartney reflected on the song in the Wingspan liner notes, saying, “I wrote ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ in my early days with Linda. I was sitting in London, playing my piano, and the song kind of wrote itsel, reflecting my feelings towards her. It’s remained a favourite of mine.”
The song’s story did not end with the original 1970 recording. In 1977, McCartney released a live version with Wings from the album Wings Over America. That version became a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
For a song written during a time of confusion and change, “Maybe I’m Amazed” has had an unusually long life.
