That had to feel so good for Pete Crow-Armstrong tonight. A double, a homer, a stolen base. It felt like you could SEE the relief when he hit that homer.
Jameson Taillon did a fantastic job staying off the barrel tonight, setting up a load of easy outs for his defense. You don’t always have to be overpower to put together a great night. Taillon and PCA can share the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game honors.
Without speaking to the results, and commenting only on how he LOOKS: you can absolutely see how Michael Soroka could emerge as a very valuable reliever for the Cubs even on into the postseason. He’s got a 95 mph fastball that gets on you in a hurry, and then a slider/curveball hybrid that just moves so freaking much (he had trouble locating it tonight, it seemed like, but it’s a chase pitch). Again, I’m not saying he’ll perform as one of the four or five best relief options when the bell rings. I’m just saying it’s easy to see the bones.
Porter Hodge just can’t get fully over that hump. After appearances where he looks like himself again, he’ll have one like tonight where he’s staked to a four-run lead in the 9th and winds up giving up a single and two walks before getting yanked. That forced Brad Keller into a game he had absolutely no business being forced into. Just cannot have that from a guy you’re hoping to rely on in even bigger games.
